Faverolles Thread

yeah, i want to see them too! i was able to hatch out 3 lavender cochin chicks a few weeks ago in hopes of trying to get a lavender and lavender cuckoo faverolles project going for next year. think i got 2 pullets and a cute cockerel out of the hatch!

Questions for the breeding pen??? SO sorting birds.......got my best, or at least my faves picked out, but I have one or two I just can't let go of because:

#1 - type-wise (at least as far as my untrained eye on this sorting/culling/picking/wait and seeing business goes) she is a good looking bird. Back, wing, tail, and head color a pretty darker colored "mahogany-ish almost" with the appropriate patterning, but her chest is not clean/creamy, it isn't "smutty/very dark little ticks", as my other smutty girls have been, it is the same tone as her top side only very much lighter, maybe a reddish cream?, but you can faintly see the same patterning as in her top-side feathers. Beard is gorgeous full and completely clean, no smut. SO with the right male is she useful?

#2 - also nice shape and color, beautiful full beard but somewhat "smutty" with quite a few pretty dark ticks, but definitely mostly white/cream. Her chest mildly smutty, but not horrible and not as bad as one of my others.... So once again with the right male would she be useful?

Or are these both just a waste of my time.... Of course I would attach a pic but my iphone died and have been taking a horse and carriage to work and talking on a several year old flip phone for the last 2 days... HAHAHAH.... Sheesh, what we get used to.... and of course real camera batteries are dead!! I'll work on that tomorrow.

Concerning males... If you have a nice looking boy except he has some white in his beard, what is his usefulness? Thanks all...... I forgot how much I loved this place... Dang summer complacency!!

#1 girl if i remember from Peter's site and what he has mentioned here, will be a good girl to put over a 'light' colored boy. if he doesn't have the dark chestnut coloring and instead it looks like a soft wheat color in his wing bows this is what he is talking about. sounds like with the girl's dark neck any boys produced from this mating may have the burn spots on their necks. if you have an older roo showing lacing around the neck area below the beard and they are light in the wing bows it may help to produce the nice lacing and creamy colored chests in the girls produced.

i have a hen that sounds like this and crossed with my oldest roo Zeus (he's light in the wing bows but has shown the lacing under the neck and beard as he got older), produces some beautiful girls! this is how i ended up with Kiva and her sister Kiera who looked like the SOP pics.

#2 the 'smutty' looking hen may help to produce boys with nice black beards and decent coloring. how is her lacing along her neck, wings and back? is it showing or barely there?

but don't quote me on this since i am not a trained expert!

things can change and others will have their own opinions. (i just do a lot of research when i can find the info!)

I am considering adding a Faverolle to my flock in the spring.

Can you give me the pros and cons of the breed? Our situation is a mixed flock, everyone is very mellow and easygoing. We have one Bantam Cochin Roo, and we free range. We have 3 small kids, a dog (that is VERY chicken friendly)...and our chickens are pretty happy campers.

I keep hearing different things about them, so unsure if I should consider one. In my flock I have: plymoth rock, maran, one lone silkie (or others were taken by predators), cochin (bantam and LF), and EE's.

thanks.

Pros would be, friendly, curious, docile, fantastic layers, super cute with their fluffy faces and feathered legs, have a tendency for broodiness (could be a con I suppose if you don't want that) and are fantastic mothers.

Cons, I would say that if you live in a wet climate their feathered legs and beards become quite a mess (like here). Or if you live somewhere it's particularly hot, bearded birds have a harder time with high heat, and I really can't think of any other cons, they are just fantastic.

Now, if you get a bird from a hatchery, I can't really speak for the personalities, other than to say that my one lone hatchery Fav girl is the single meanest hen I have ever had, and I am not the only one to ever say that (both with other birds and with people, I cannot touch her without getting bitten, not pecked, bitten). Birds from a breeder generally have the correct Faverolle personality and you never know what you'll get from a hatchery.

Are the bantam's known to go broody? My DS has another bantam breed and we are struggling with getting them to lay eggs and they are on wire with a rooster.

Thanks chickie'smoma!! I just can't get it all pounded into my head but now that I'll be using my own hatches to breed forward, maybe it'll sink in. Thanks!!

On the heat and beards.... I have bantams ans I didn't lose any to heat this summer! We had record number of days over 100, like 20 days or somehting and we have the humidity to contend wiht also. They panted away and egg production dropped some but never stopped completely. I'm sure they will appreciate the cooler weather though.

Hey! Has anybody else had any cockerels that looked like this? Will they be normal salmon colored when they are older? I've had some interesting looking cockerels, but these are especially odd. They are very red on their backs, and usually I only have a little bit of red show up.

HI, i have been wondering that also... I have a couple but most of mine are the darker backs with one having solid black back....not sure where that came from as everything i have is Salmon/blue salmon that were penned together. The black one is slated to leave, picks on the others. The one blue Salmon has a funny pale reddish tinge too making me think that it may be from one of the females. dunno, will see how they grow out... eliz
