Looking at all these wonderful photos makes me so envious!
As I have mentioned before, we have a very small gene pool in Australia.
To make it more difficult I live in the island state, so it is difficult for me to attend the large shows and try and charm a breeder or two into selling me some eggs from show quality stock.
There is only one other person that I know of with large salmons here, and he does not breed selectively. I won't gain anything by trading with him, I don't think
So I will try and explain my problem and ask my clever friends here for advice.
From the first lot of eggs we were able to get, we selected the largest and best coloured rooster. He looks quite good now except for the fact that he has distinctly cochin wattles with hardly any muff.
Most of his female offspring from this year are looking good, but the males are a mixed lot. One female chick threw back to bantam.
Because it is the end of the breeding season here, I will have to wait and try and contact people who show up as winning prizes in mainland shows by next year.
My thinking is that in the meantime I will have to choose the best of the males from this year and put him back over the best of the hens and try and stabilise the features in my flock.
Perhaps we can use this as a collective exercise in breeding...and I will try and work out how to post pics so you will know how we are getting on.
