Chickie'sMoma :

there are a few in MA. Dick Boulanger isn't on here often but he is down in Douglas, MA. and there is Keesmom somewhere in the middle of the state. and there is someone, sorry but i can't think of her name off the top of my head, she lives down in the Cape Cod area too! i think all 3 have LF. i only have bantams and not any i can part with at the moment.

I already spoke to Dick about getting some of his birds. He won't have anything available for several months,

nt until he gets his breeding pens going.

M.C., are you going to the Northeast Poultry Congress? It's the 14-15 of January, although Saturday is the day to go. I will have some of my favs there, and I'm hoping Dick will stop by to give me an assessment.

i'd like to find someone to travel down with me on Saturday but i'd probably have to leave really early to get there for 8 or 9am! i think it is supposed to be a 3 hour trip for me! (ok, insert Gilligan's Island theme here)

i don't think my dh would want to go to this. he doesn't even like to go to the swaps! being in a HUGE room full of crowing birds is just not his thing.

Hi all!

I'm just popping in.... Am hatching some SF eggs (three chicks thus far) and have a question about the color sexing thing. I know it's REALLY easy to do once they start to feather out (which is why I'm hatching SF and Wheaten Marans), but of my 3 SF chicks so far two of them have black spots under the fuzz on their wing ends. It's a patch about the size of a tiny eraser head. Would these be roos by any chance? (i.e., the black showing up early?)

I'm new to this breed, so please forgive my ignorance.

It's not ignorance if you are asking questions in an attempt to learn! Everyone starts somewhere. And to halfway answer your question...I would guess yes. I say "guess" because I really don't pay that much attention to it and don't band them to see later on!

That being said, some males are lighter than others, so some might not have that spot. Also, I have seem some very dark males have a black haze to the down on their heads and backs as chicks...

Hope I didn't muddy the waters too much!

OK Fav club members...I know it's early and it's kind of a rush thing, BUT if anyone is planning on donating any specials for the Western National in April, and would like that info to get into the show catalog, I need to know by January 7th.

Thanks!!!

Then I had a pullet who as a chick had grey racing stripes on her back. Was convinced for 2 weeks that it was a cockerel. Just to confuse things further.

I just wait until they get body feathers to be sure.

Same here. Everyone would rather go to Maine for the long weekend instead of being dragged to a poultry show. Otherwise I'd love to go with you.

If you do go take lots of pics!
