Faverolles Thread

I ordered some Faverolles one year and all were normal looking except for one hen, she was completely white, Whats that about???

White is recessive in Favs, so you can have a salmon flock that carries it and occasionally get a white, they will usually have some salmon leakage. :)

OK, I need input for the judges for the Western National (I got the scoop before the show catalog came out).

The options are:

Jamie Matts (New York)
Paul Weiser (Washington)
Danny Williamson (Kansas)

The only one of them that I have any experience with is Jamie Matts. I think he's very nice, and he knows his stuff, BUT I don't know how I feel about a Cochin guy judging the Favs...

Any thoughts from anyone??

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with their bird's leg feathers? I have a cockerel who started limping. I could not find any injury. Yesterday I noticed that skin where his leg feathers protrude is very red and irritated. I am spraying his leg with Beta-dine. Any suggestions?

It's pretty common for feather legged birds to get scaly leg mites. Are the scales raised at all? I have had one cock bird that had really red and inflamed legs and all his feather follicles got really inflamed (his legs would bleed at the drop of a hat) we never figured out what the issue was. He eventually shed all the scales and they grew back in fine and flat and he hasn't had any problems since then. He's a hatchery bird though and has never been used for breeding, so your boys are not related to him in any way.

If there's any raising to the scales at all, I would put vaseline on his legs every few days for a couple of weeks, and you can mix some Ivermectin into the vaseline as well. If the scales aren't raised at all, maybe (if he'll cooperate) try soaking his legs in warm water with epsom salts... I tried all sorts of expensive antibiotic sprays and ointments on that one bird, with no luck...

I've used Pam cooking spray with good results. Easy to apply and a whole lot less messy than vaseline.
