Faverolles Thread

My husband and I are getting chickens next spring. We're taking the time to educate ourselves, have our backyard landscape (being professional done now), buying a GREAT coop, and build both a brooder and chicken run. What docile chickens will get along with Favarolles? I don't want to raise bullies.

I have a mix with my flavorelle. They were raised together. But she does stay close with our rooster who is an Australorp. Polish are just as gentle as the flavorelle.

I can't speak for all Faverolles, but when we bought ours we bought a Pekin Pullet at the same time. They seem friendly to each other.

Are you looking for any particular traits in your chickens? Egg color or size? Productivity? Ones that tolerate confinement or ones that like to range?

This will be hens only. I wish to get all docile girls. They will be in a giant run. I'd like to know breeds to avoid. I don't want my Favarolle picked on. As pretty as they are; I'll forfeit getting one if she's not going to be happy. I plan to get my mixed flock all at the same time.

I find Cochins to be pretty gentle and compatible with most other birds. I have Salmon Favorelles, Houdan, Cochin, Phoenix, and Dorking all together now and they do fine together. I would not go with sex links. They are not the friendliest with other birds - great layers however.

Cochins and silkies are docile, though both can be annoyingly broody. Other breeds that have gotten along with the free roaming pet Fav flock here have been speckled Sussex, Buttercup, buff Minorca, Easter Egger, brown Leghorn, dark Brahma, Austrolorp, and one of the 2 Fayoumis. The other is evil.

Really? That's interesting, in my flock it's my EEs that are bossy while my RIRs are pretty easy going and don't seem to bother anyone, they even let a 2 week old Partridge Rock chick walk up and peck them. Although I haven't noticed my faverolle getting picked on by anyone yet. Mostly she stays out of the middle of everything, my Cochin does hang out my faverolle a lot though. Right now all of my mixed flock seems to get a long pretty well.

I do plan to get a Sussex or two, a Bared Rock, 2 Wyandottes (1 gold; 1 silver), and an Orpington. I certainly would be able to make room for a Cochin and possibly a Silkie too. I plan to get everyone at the same time. We are purchasing a 40 sq.ft. coop (not counting the 8 egg boxes or the run that will encompass over 75% of the back yard.
Out of curiosity; does anyone know how Copper Marans, Wellsummers, or a Cream Legbar will interact with her?

I had hatchery Welsummers several years ago. Pretty birds, but I wasn't fond of their personalities. Same with the cuckoo Marans we had at the time. Given I had such a small sample I can't say if that's normal for the breed or not.

However there will always be bad eggs in every breed. I've hatched a few nasty Faverolles over the years too. Males and females. Get the breeds you like and want to try. If one is cranky and doesn't work out then maybe rehome the problem hen and try another breed.
