Faverolles Thread

unfortunately i don't use facebook. i guess i just haven't gotten into the whole thing yet. eventually i may do it.

well, i've decided that i'm going to be sticking to 2 breeds i'd like to keep working with. bantam favs and brahmas. i'm not sure if i want to do bantams or LF on the brahmas or just keep those mostly for egg production and broodyness. this has been my first year of trials to see who i like out of all the breeds i have.

my wyandottes are ok but have been very vocal-are one of the loudest in the bunch, and have been very tenacious at chasing others and plucking feathers. i've had too many issues with the crested breeds-hatching has been tough and my 1 hatchery houdan and my 2 home hatched bantam polish have been sick a couple of times this year. though i like the flaky personalities i haven't been impressed with them. my houdan keeps cracking eggs-hers and one of the brahmas when she keeps trying to get into the nest box when another egg/hen is present. the only one that seems to do the greatest is a houdan/polish mix that is a constant producer of eggs and laughs! my EE i'm keeping for the green eggs and she has a nice personality. the cochins have been sweet and i may keep a few around even if it is just to help with brooding eggs and for their sweetness. my bantam cochin roo Sunny seems to adore my favs the most out of everyone in the coop, and he's been crate trained too! keeping up on greasing their combs and wattles has been the only issue i've had so far with them, but everyone seems to have them. my silkie cockerel is still too young for me to determine if i'll be keeping him but i have a straight feathered sizzle i'll be keeping him with, but i probably won't be keeping him.

the faverolles and brahmas have been been the best out of the whole lot!

i've been on vacation this last week and it has been nice to go out to the garage coop and sit with all of them while they are most active. i kneel down to get closer to their level and 'talk' to them and the first ones to come running over to jump in my lap are the 2 bantam favs and my bantam buff brahma. my 2 LF light brahmas are right there 'talking' and seeing if i brought them treats too. i've been keeping one other fav in the house since she had been badly beaten up, she is a wonderful house hen and loves to cuddle-but she is now so fearful of other hens that i can't get her back out in the coop this winter.

Its really really hard to find good Breeders these days as I am finding out. I have a really nice little flock of Salmon and blue salmon bantams and I will have eggs for sale later this spring. Nikki at Hattricksilkies was the one who sold me my little flock she has lots off awsome faverolles! She has an auction for eggs right now on Eggbid and also in the BST section of this sight. I don't know of many other breeders of these great little birds.

Good Luck,
Henry

Cool, Thanks!

Chickn (aka Wendy) had some in my area during a swap back in May. i'm going to check with her to see if she is still breeding them and will have more chicks next spring. her's are very nice and seem to be of good breeding.

ok, here's her home page. not a lot of pics but the 2 girls i have from her have been wonderful. http://www.freewebs.com/countrygirlscoop/

My girls have stopped laying hopefully its just temporary after the 5 eggs I set today I haven't got anything. On Sunday night they are moving into the big coop so hopefully that will trigger them to lay.
