Faverolles Thread

Not yet but I haven't gone through a spring with them I would love to have one or two hens go broody. Nikki said that they make great moms so I am assuming that she has had some of here go broody. Also Chickie'smoma had a bantam hen go broody recently not sure is she did a good job though.

In other breeds, some are good mommas. My Blue Amercuana banty hen lays her eggs, went broody but terrible mom once they hatched. She just abandoned them.

If I would have known her to do that, I would let her set the eggs, let them hatch and then take them away from her and have a sacrificial chick under her to see if she would turn around this time. her sister did an excellent job but after her chicks were old enough, she died suddenly and I had to take the chicks in as orphans and raise them up until they can defend themselves when they got bigger.

HOpe you will have a few broodies in your flock!

Hey My house is on an acre and a half you would be suprised

I pasture most of my chickens though so its not to bad but my quarentine is several large dog crates. My coop fits 15 bantams and my other tractor fits about 6 adult birds. I am going to use a tractor for a grow out pen also. My setup is limited to birds in quarentine and two breeding groups. You would be suprised

I wish I had more farm land and room for more birds.

i'm on less than a 1/2 acre here. but the former owners were good enough to leave a huge shed (think it is something like 10' x16') at the back corner of the yard near the woods. we converted it and added a run area for the girls. i just have to hide the roos in my garage coop from any complaining neighbors (none so far!) at least having the breeding area in my garage i can keep the temps controlled. i still let my roos out in the yard during the day time when i'm home and working out there but i don't let them stay out there when they get noisy.

yeah, Chloe my mahogany went broody on me. it was 2 other hens i had in with her that didn't help-lost 2 chicks to them being grabby. she was still on some eggs that were hatching so she was very focused on those and 2 other chicks that had survived. Chloe won't let me take the chicks away from her-still very protective over the 4 that survived that are now 3 weeks old. all chicks from her are females too!!!

We are fortunate that space is not an issue. Housing is expensive to bulid... and time is at a premium with the day jobs. Once I retire I would like to have more birds... but for now this is enough.

DH won't like it, but I'm going to ask the breeder if I can get both.
This means more coops.

Thanks for the advice

They sound very different, & she said one shows better on the west coast, one on the east. I guess if I'm getting this involved, I will not want to miss nationals. I havent yet joined the Fav club; is there a National Show in the works?
I'll keep you posted!

Yes, I had spoken with Jim Pollard a few times in the past as I had a few large Cuckoo's. Now gone of course. I saw his cuckoo bantams at the fav national when it was held in Missouri. I am not sure if Carol still raises birds. All I remember is she said it was quite the challenge to keep the favs from overheating in the summer. It was a shame to hear that Ed Willoughby had to give up the large Buff Faverolles that he was working on.

I also advise to get Carol Buffingtons as her birds were great, but so are Dick Boulanger's.

Peter, do you know whatever became of Scott & Mary Wagner? Mary is the person responsible for getting me started in Faverolles and over the years I have lost contact. I have heard stories of 'personal reasons' but don't know if it is fact or fiction.

Also Ron (and Jonathan) Patterson says his birds are from you mostly. He may have Dick's blood in there too, but he gives you credit for his stock.

Please help me out with the colors of my babies - if you can tell for certain yet. These 6 are from Melissa Parker (pasofinofarm) and hatched last Friday/Saturday. Some of the pics are not that great but I had a hard time keeping them still.

CHICK #1 (I only managed one good picture of this one - it was just too nosy.

CHICK#3 This was my last one hatched. It was a little weak at first and I marked it with a red dot on its head to keep an eye on it.

So are there any remaining LF breeders out there with the old lines that have (or will have) birds available? Leisha gave me one contact but I would like to find others as well. There are several bantam breeders, but LF have been very difficult to find. I wish Dick still had his birds. I'm not that far from him.

Please PM me with any contact info, if you have it.
