Faverolles Thread

I had one roo to 5 pullets. Wish I still had him. His flightiness did him in-he raced out through a mostly closed coop door, ostensibly to get away from me, behind me while I was feeding, into the dog's mouth. This dog (Lefty) nabbed a few chickens as a puppy, but had (I thought) outgrown it.

The dog felt awful; "sorry mom, but I couldn't help it, he fluttered right into my mouth". He had snapped once and let go, but the roo (8 weeks old) bled through his open beak, gaped, & died immediately. It was looking for a new roo that I found Cornelius, in my avatar at present. I'm glad I found him but am still sad at losing Bruce. Lefty MacDoggal hasn't touched a chicken since, though he gazes longingly at the broody who attacks him every time she has chicks...she once crossed a pen full of goats to get at him, lol. And of course, he is never left alone with them.

I think I would have had a better hatch rate if I had used a bator, or isolated both broodies; one was in the quonset hut/workshop, the other was in a 4x4x4' wooden apple bin on its side next to the goats. She had competition from 2 other hens for the eggs, and hatched 2 of her 8. The one inside hatched 4 of her 7, so total 40%, but the two ladies had 25% & 57% hatch rates.
These are standard, but their eggs are smallish.

They also were bought & shipped in August, so no cold damage.

Ron does have Sharon's strain, but she did not sell out to him I don't believe. Where the rest of her flock is, who knows. Ron probably won't have anymore to sell until fall, and I don't think he sells eggs. I will have to wait until I am back from this deployment to find out about my old flock. I don't know if they are still in existance. By the way, my computer crashed, so I am using a 'public' computer on the camp I'm at to type this. I'll only be able to be on BYC once a week or so now, until I get back from this deployment.

David,

I just wanted to say thank you for your service. I have a son serving now and I know that it is a sacrifice. I will be praying for you during your deployment.

I just figured out faverolles roosters make great black and white photo subjects I am in photo class and I hand printed some pictures of the faverolles rooster and they look great.

I just moved my five Fav babies out to the garage. They've been in a puppy crate in my bedroom for what, three weeks? Or four? I can't remember, LOL! Anyway, they were definitely outgrowing the puppy crate, and I was getting tired of the smell even though I was changing their bedding daily, so they are out, with a heat lamp. I've got some chicks ordered, hopefully coming in about three weeks, so I'll have to get the big brooder cage set up soon, too, but for now the Favs are in my big dog crate. I think they are happy; at least I didn't hear any distressed cheeping!

Concerning toe standard of the breed according to Mr. Merlin, "This breed has five separate toes and skin and leg color are white. Light feathering should appear on the outside of the leg and outer toes. There is a slight break between the feathers of the body and leg. The leg feathering of the Cochin is not what is desired."

I also discovered this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1620934

For
the life of me I cannot find any web page or detailed information about what that 5th toe is really supposed to look like or where it is supposed to be placed. Is it still up for interpretation? If anyone can point me in the direction of how long that 5th toe is supposed to be and where on the foot it is supposed to be placed, I would sincerely appreciate it. And any feathering outside of the outside toe is a defect?

Thanks.

Email Peter he will actually probably be on to answer this question tommorow. I am interested as well. I have been looking for a toe that goes almost straight back not out to the side I also know you need to look for an upright toe not a flat or droopy toe. I will try and get foot pictures soon.
