Faverolles Thread

Well I think I am going to have to cull the lavender D'uccles rooster which is really a blow to my lavender project! I believe he has a head injury. He is super flighty and I moved him from one coop to another last night thinking he would be fine. He must have panicked and hit his head. His eyes are dilated and he cannot walk.

This really is terrible I feel horrible I have never had a bird that flighty before maybe its for the best. On the plus side I do have four very nice little lavender D'uccles cockerels in the brooder from Wegotchickens. Now I wish I had been patient and just waited for them to grow out rather then spending $60 on a bird who didn't get to do any breeding! Oh well lesson learned

So sorry to hear about your setback.
It is possible he will recover but if he is still not able to eat and drink tomorrow I would euthanize him. Sometimes stuff happens and it is, in the big picture, a good thing... better 1 flighty cockerel death than a line of birds prone to accidents

I once had super flighty jungle fowl; beautiful birds, excellent moms, fantastic foragers (they would leap up to grab a passing bug!), strong flyers, dedicated and protective roos.... I got rid of them when a hen I had had for over a year flew through a single pane window and never looked back- if she laid eggs and got broody there is a very high likely hood that there are red jungle fowl still roaming the woods of Bristol NH. They were the best natural breeding chickens I ever had... but they were as wild as any bird that came to my bird-feeder.

Hey Guys! I feel like i'm jumping in here....but this seems like the place to ask my question

I got my first day old chicks back in March, 2 EE's, 1 Welsummer and 2 Salmon Fav's from Meyer hatchery. I've known I wanted Faverolles for a long time! My 2 girls (maybe?) are named Weezah and Bernice. Weezah has some coloring that is waaay off the mark for Salmon Faverolles, and I was wondering if maybe she is actually a roo? Or another type of Faverolles? I know that quality of hatchery birds varies, and I'm not trying to breed/show or anything like that, i'm just curious. If she is not a roo, any ideas of her breeding? Even Bernice has some black in her beard.....but not near as much as Weezah. Anyhoo.....I'll post pictures now!

This is Bernice: she's got a little black in her beard....

And this is Weezah; They are both the same age, from Meyer and sexed, which i understand isn't 100% accurate

What do you guys think? If Weezah is a roo, I will still keep her/him. She's super sweet and I've read great things about Faverolles Roosters.

Thanks!

LOVE that last pic! her expression is wonderful. they all look like pullets to me, just poor color from hatchery breeding. they still make wonderful pets with perks!

it looks like you are about 4 hours away from me here in NH! i don't know how easy it would be to get birds or hatching eggs across the border, probably easier to get hatching eggs than the birds!

i'm still waiting on my group in with the blue salmon boy to start producing eggs full time. but i would expect them to be in full swing within the next month!

I'm hoping to take some pictures Friday to post -- way too tired tonight. But I think my three whites are a cockerel and two pullets, now, based on the combs. It's still tentative, though.

I turned the older beardless cockerel (January hatched) out of the chicken tractor where I've been keeping that batch, and when I go outside to do chores or work in the yard, he often follows me around. He's a lot less skittish than any of my other birds. I do think he may start showing some aggression, though, as he's raised his hackles at me a couple of times. We'll see how he does this summer when I'll have a bunch of company, including a couple of youngsters who'll be spending the summer. If he bothers anyone, I can put him back into a tractor for the duration.

All of mine, as chicks, will attack when I put my hand in their pen, or pick one up! They don't peck, they bite! Really strange chickens! But they don't bite hard enough to cause any damage (though it might be a different story with a small child), so I won't hold it against them.

Now I need to start thinking (seriously) about breeding pens!

Great! Thanks so much. I suppose things would be less complicated if she's not a roo.

I never realized how difficult chickens are to take pictures of, my girls don't like the flash!

AndreaS - Your Weezah looks very similar to my Faverolles hen that I got from Meyer last year. Mine is an even darker red. She started out with a black beard as well but now (she is a year old) her beard has come in almost completely white.
