Faverolles Thread

I just saw the funniest thing! We have had a bumper crop of lightning bugs this year and the splashes were out in there run just now when I went to lock up the other coops and the splashes were chasing lightning bugs flapping around and trying to hatch them

What's the size for bantams again? I don't have a standard handy need to make new copies of it. If I remember correctly its in onces right?

cock = 30 oz, cockerel = 26 oz, hen= 26 oz, pullet = 24 oz.

ps-that blue salmon cock I got from you weighs 38 oz lol "fatty, fatty 2x4"

Those are the weights stated in the APA. In the ABA it states cock=34 oz, cockerel 32 oz, hen 32 oz and pullet 30 oz. You can see the discrepency between the standards.

Also in the color of the hens and pullets, APA calls for salmon brown, the ABA calls for salmon pink. When I use to show I would show dark hens and pullets and light hens and pullets. I tried to cover all the bases. At the time you didn't know if you had an APA judge or an ABA judge. Now I believe judges have to be APA and ABA approved. It's up to the judge to decide which standard he will judge by.

Yes, I do the same thing on the color when showing too. You never know what the judge wants. There are only a couple judges that really know there is a difference.

I was about 5 pages behind on this thread... and I have it set for extra long pages! I'm happy to see how well everyone is doing, happy to see Leisha here (and sad she's needing medical treatment

My 2 dozen eggs from Dick arrived Wednesday & started incubating yesterday. I may give some to a broody (2 new broodies in the last 2 weeks!) so the rest can turn properly. I have F1 & F2, so have to decide which eggs to put under a hen. The R-com 20 is supposed to hold 20, but it holds 18 of these babies. My Fav pullet eggs are about 50 grams, these eggs are all around 60! That means 6 outside or in the old Brower.... just bought it a new wafer and haven't installed & tested it yet, so I think the broody would be safer for now. I want 100% hatch, 22 pullets, 2 cockerels. I don't ask much, heh.

Hugs to all!

Yes, our standard calls for eight pounds. Personally I like them bigger. On one visit to Engand I stayed with Sue Bruton and her husband. I had a chance to weigh two of her birds. Her cockerel, under a year old weighed 8 pounds, her cock bird weighed 11 pounds. Faverolles are suppose to be a meat bird so I prefer more weight.
Dick

I'm with you on that one Dick! But if breeding for show...are the judges that harsh on the weights???

I was never questioned on the weight of the bird. I believe thet allow 2 lbs under or over. Only for large fowl.

Ya the last show the judge had no idea about Faverolles and I had 20+ people come up to me and ask me what are those funny looking birds ha ha. It did kinda make me mad I wished there were other people to compete with or at least talk to about the breed.

I'm still waiting on my SOP from the APA. Eight pounds is what the standard calls for? Just as Dick said they're a meat bird so I'm surprised they shouldn't be larger. My Sussex hens weigh more than that.

Though a couple of those black hens I brought home are probably close to that too! And laying like crazy.

This is why you need to go to The Faverolles national show. Usually that's were you would see most of the Faverolles and you get to meet breeders from all over the country.
