Chickie'sMoma :

sad news. i went out to my coop in the back yard this morning to put Mosey out with the girls and when i opened the pop door and expected my EE to be the first or second one out the door, she didn't come out and neither did a few of my other hens and pullets.

a raccoon raided my coop and killed 5 of my girls, one of the hens was my Hat Trick girl i got from Henry. one girl is missing and there were no signs of her anywhere-my little lady Snowy.

my dad came over to help me try to reinforce the door where we believe it could have climbed through the top. and we put welded wire on the rafters so the girls could not get up into the over hanging are to lay eggs. we figured that this may have also been an entry area since it was not covered well with screen mesh. i wish i had taken care of that last year when i first suggested it to the dh that it needed to be done properly to keep things out!

i'm so distraught that i brought the remaining girls inside tonight as a trial of the reinforcements so i could see if anything tried to tamper with it while keeping my birds safe.

Sorry for your loss. I just caught a raccoon 2 nights ago after she got two of my hens that I was saving for next years breeding season. I was saving these three sisters for a breeding pen, only one left. Needless to say the raccoon went the same way my other two hens did.

I have to take the shrubs down around my big pen and look into some electric fencing around the top. I've lost to many birds over the years.

Glad you got her Dick! foxes have been my main problem here but I know we have coons to. All of my pens are mad of hardware cloth so I don't think the coons have figured it out yet but maybe they are just biding their time. I hope not.

I feel your pain! I am in the middle of a racoon war right now myself. We have caught 6 so far and my roo, Emmet, actually got in a fight with one (a young one fortunately) last week. Emmet won although he did lose a few feathers. These rascals are coming in the coop in broad daylight! Hopefully we will get rid of them all soon.

Hello all. I just wanted to drop by and say

I just hatched 2 bantam Salmon Favorelles. They were sent to me as extra "test" eggs when I got my Porcelain D'uccles. I guess that I need more now....lol. What kind of temperment do these guys have? How long before I can sex them?
