I had told Henry he could make that choice if he felt she were suffering. I'm sorry he had to do it, and I thank him for taking such good care for her in the time he had her. I wish it had been a simple case of wry neck.

So I picked up some of the red salmon boys today. You're right Dick, they will be some nice looking birds! I have 4 of them, and a few somewhat darker pullets. One is more odd colored, with some black flecking and an almost light barring.

Laura said they got some new males last year, I think from Jen. Since then the number of red males that are hatching out has increased significantly. From probably 2 out of 100 to 20 out of 100. Plus the number of off colored pullets is up. It's amazing how the genes from one bird can affect everything!

Now speaking of genes, I'm certain my one red LF chick is a roo. He's not solid red like the bantams I just got, but he's quite red. Only black on him is a couple of primary feathers.

I also have my first F1 chicks hatching today. I expected them to all to be black, but there's one yellow chick with a light grey spot on it's head in there too. At first I thought it was a pure Coronation, but it has feathered legs. So what other colors are behind the blacks? I assume salmon? I set a second batch a couple of days ago so we'll see what crops up in that hatch.

Hi Sandi! Glad you could check in. How old are your young ones now? Two weeks maybe?

Cindy I am just thinking back Dick said all of the Lav splits he hatched were black regardless of wether the parents where salmon or black hen except for one chick who was yellow. Maybe the same thing is in play.

There's a second yellow one trying to hatch too, that I am certain is from a fav egg. As for the one that has already hatched I am sure it isn't from the Sussex. I can see the start of some black feathers on the wings, while the Sussex is white. And it has feathering down to the outer toe. I think the dots on the head may be due to Columbian, but I'd have to check. I can post pics of them side by side later, assuming I can get my camera to get decent close ups.

The second one has hatched. It hasn't completely dried out yet, but it is yellow, and it has 5 toes on each foot. So I have 5 cross chicks now. Two yellow, 3 black, 2 with 5 toes and 3 with 4 toes. All have feathered legs.

I took some recent pictures of the birds I hatched from Henry's eggs.

What do you all think of the rooster? Will the black spot on his neck go away as he matures? Also, is this a blue or regular Salmon? Sorry so many questions.

Here's one other girl. She has some dark feathers in her beard.

I guess she wouldn't place very well at a show. The other girl has better coloring.
I was wondering. Do you all keep the rooster with the hens if you plan on showing them in the Fall? I was afraid he might damage their feathers by then. He is just old enough to start mating right now.

If you plan on showing and want them in really good condition you need to seperate them I didn't do well this spring because I didn't seperate mine or keep them off dirt.
