Faverolles Thread

Julie. Thanks!! I hate you are down about it. I would definitely not give up until more judges have told you their opinion because like Henry is saying, he obviously just didn't like any of them your cockerel looks good. They oth ate fairly similar in appearnce to me. Mine jut a litttle darker and obviously younger so less tail/sicle. But I think yours is beautiful. Does my opinion count?? No not really cuz I'm just learning and wouldn't be able to pick through the less obvious traits.

Henry - who knows. I really think he just hasn't seen enough. Like I said I haven't seen enough to be able to discern perfect "type", maybe hey just aren't filled out good enough yet? I know Julie's pullets are lighter than mine but have way more beard. So hey boh have traits to go either way I guess. But he had told her the ones he had seen at other shows were just more square or something so that just tells me that he hasn't seen many or even knows them very well. Who knows??!!

One thing I do know is these popular little brahmas and Cochins are gonna keep beating us (as a collective group, and even the most perfect fav) for champ unless we get these favs in their face at every show so they can learn the standard and recognize a good bird. They may just not know so go wih what is a safe pick. JMO

Dick told me he used to bring all of his pullets just to make the Judge really learn the Faverolles. He would bring 20 of them for the judge to have to go over them all and pick the best one. We need to get our numbers up so that we can really test the judges and put them through their paces! I wish I could show more but I don't have the space to keep the numbers you need to have a great show string. I would need to get a cage setup like Leisha's which I am considering doing on a smaller scale so I can keep at least 6-10 birds in show condition.

Oh, I surely know nothing about the show world. But It doesn't seem fair to me, that a judge has no clue about a breed & is judging it . It doesn't seem fair showing & judging to me. I think Judges have to be up on all breeds that maybe at any show they judge...
sorry, this comes from a very, very new-bee to chickens. JMOP
Good luck to you all !!

I don't know much about the showing world either just been to a few small shows. Leisha, Dick, and Peter are much better sources for showing information. I would say that its almost impossible to master every standard of every breed both bantam and standard. Many judges also just don't expect Faverolles at there show they are so few in this country! You can't fault the judge and he gave his honest opinion bad judges won't give you a reason or even talk to you. At least Julie and Kassandra's judges did them the courtesy of explaining their decisions and telling them how they could improve their birds or what they interpreted to be the faults or things that needed to be tweaked. I also think every judge see's birds differently and reads the standard differently (many may disagree) but that is also why judges don't place the birds the same way. That is just a newbies opinions about the show world PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AS FACT!!! Its just my opinion and it can be a piss poor one sometimes

Well, I don't know how much experience the judge had. He said that he had seen Favs at other shows that were so much better than these. That was why he was down on them. I think his assessment of my pullets was probably right although someone said that some judges like the lighter birds and some like the darker.

I'm going to go ahead and take them to the State Fair and see what the judges there say, since I'm already entered.

No, I'm not faulting the judge at all! He was very personable and spent a lot of time with me explaining his decisions when I asked. I was just disappointed with the placement.

That true if you really want to get into showing get some started show birds from someone who actively shows like Leisha or another breeder. Those birds will have a better chance at winning then birds you hatch from eggs because the breeder culls the ones that don't fit the standard at all and by the time they are old enough to sell they should be weeded down to the birds that are closer to standard. Sorry that the hens didn't do well I can't remember do you have a splash and a blue salmon hen? Splash and Blue salmon are not APA or ABA recognized and that could have played a role. Only white and salmon are APA recognized and blue, black, white, and salmon are ABA recognized if I remember correctly. There is an effort being made to get LF Blue and Black recognized. I would also love to get splash and blue salmon recognized.

No worries I wasn't faulting you or the judge just wanted to make sure people didn't interpret my earlier comment about them not being qualified.

I never could tell if my pullets were Salmon or Blue Salmon. I know that the rooster is not blue, but his chest is lighter and not coal black.
