Faverolles Thread

Peter, i know you aren't always on here, but i figured i would ask this in case someone else may have some input too!

i was just reading a thread about line breeding and some defects that tend to show up in birds-fused toes, curled toes, crossed/scissored beaks, etc (this was mostly about marans though). i am just curious since you have a closed flock of birds if you have ever seen these issues pop up from time to time and if you remedy it in the adult birds any certain way? some people had mentioned that the toe issues are mostly from lack of biotin (vitamin B7) in their breeders' diets and i wasn't sure if you supplement their diets with anything when you are planning on breeding your birds. do you add anything extra for vitamins and minerals or certain foods to help keep them at their prime?

did you start with lots of birds to begin with all your breeding or did you had a very small group you might have been working with and doing line breeding?

I have one little Faverolle chick that hatched yesterday, on day 21. The other egg was not even pipped this morning, so I assumed the worst and took it out. Well, I was surprised to hear a cheep! cheep! and determined pecking from inside. I noticed my thermometer was reading 98˚. I've think that low temps can cause them to hatch later? Not that day 22 is really late, but my bantams usually pip on day 19 and are hatching by day 20. Anyway, Go, chickie!

Chickie'sMoma :

like Keesmom said, there must be full fav in those! they don't have any visible traits of silkies that would always show up in any crosses. rarely have i ever seen a silkie cross that doesn't have some sort of trace from the silkie blood-usually the comb, skin color or the head puff will show up, or those blue earlobes!

Yeah I havent seen any silkie traits, i thought that was kinda odd. Thanks.

Would some of you Fav people check out my little roo?

Couldn't get the pullets to hold still enough and have to use my phone for pics, but if you can see enough, is he alright looking or not?

a few too many points on his comb but find the right girl with less will offset in the offspring. wingbow color looks good from what i can see. got any more pics? side views are helpful too so we can see his shape.

sometimes i find it helpful to have a treat (veggies, leaf lettuce, spinach leaf) that they can focus on, you can hold in front of them and if it is large enough they won't take a finger or two off trying to eat it! that may help you get a clear pic on the hens. a way to suspend it so you have your hands free is good too!

There's a storm coming in, so might be tomorrow, might be monday. LOL

I'll get them on here though and a side view of this little guy.

I bought them about 3 weeks ago and the following week I found a trio of beautiful LF and could have kicked myself since I had no room for them then.

anyone local to NH/MA/ME that have some decent lf favs for sale? i am planning on going down to the NE Bantam show on Sunday and will be looking for a couple of lf pullets or hens for my cuckoo project. my cuckoo marans x fav is a roo and ended up being larger than a bantam and i think has hurt my Chloe in the process of trying to mate her. most of my birds are running together for the winter for warmth, but i wanted to separate this sweet boy with a few of his own girls if i could find some!

i'd be willing to get a couple of cuckoo marans if i couldn't get the favs! i could always use them to breed with my bantam fav boys to make more of what i need later!
