Faverolles Thread

Hi guys,

This is Jonathan Patterson. My dad (Ron) and I have been raising the faverolles since 2003. Our start came from Peter and Dick. I had a friend forward this link to me so I thought I would get on. I am happy to see Peter still has birds. By the way, you are doing great with the black wyandotte project. I saw the pics you posted a few pages back. Are you working on those with Sharon? We got some White Faverolles from her in probably 2005 and still raise some. We cut them way back, but we are planning on having several hatched for the crossroads show. They are better than the salmons in my opinion when they are right. We just don't get many that are "right." Peter and Dick would be pleased to know that dad and I have joined them in the very small group of Salmon Faverolle grand master exhibitors.

Next on the list is the whites.
As some of you may know, White Wyandottes are my favorite breed and the one I work with the most. I now have a place where I can have birds. I can lift some of the burden off of Dad and raise them at my place. He is going to continue with the Faverolles. We should have some good ones at Crossroads if the hens would start laying.

Done for now,
Jonathan

Just a 2cent thought here OR, a DUMBXXX question here, but doesent "form follows function, and beauty follows that"? apply when breeding anything??? Please DO correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree if your applying that to the type before color question. I am not sure what you guys think about this but one of my long term goals/ projects is to have a line of Faverolles that are bred towards standard but where I can either use males or Capons as meat birds and where the hens have a decent lay rate.

The only people I know who eat their Faverolles culls is Melissa and her family. She said that the males make really good meat birds.

If thats not the function you were talking about sorry but I think they were a duel purpose birds back in France correct?

Peter and I have talked about caponizing a bit I know its a controvercial topic maybe I can try some out from my 4-H project hatch. I will have the help of 20+ pre vet students

I agree though but I think right now some of our birds are bred for the function of being bred to APA standard and for the function of us enjoying them not saying that is wrong.

Give me your views on this maybe I am wrong or I am just seeing this from the wrong view or something.

Welcome to the Thread Jonathan your Faverolles are great seen some pictures of them.

I don't think he has and black wyndottes left he said he sent them off when he moved those were pictures of his old birds.

If you have any extra whites I am eventually going to be looking for my start in them possibly at the Crossroads show. I would like to get into whites as there are not many breeders left with them in LF. I think you and David Swaim are some of the only ones with them left.

Glad you can have birds again being in college and not having birds is annoying.

The are FANTASTIC!!! I ate one of the LF whites I hatched from Melissa's eggs, and have another one that's just waiting for a day of decent weather. I cook them all day in a crockpot, and they absolutely melt in your mouth!!

All of my Faverolles cockerels culls get sent to freezer camp. I haven't bought a chicken from the store in over a year. The taste of home grown is soooo much better. So far I have roasted, fried, grilled and put them in the crockpot and have found them to be superior to store bought in every way.

I too am waiting for a day of halfway decent weather to put a couple more in the freezer as I just made chicken soup with my last one.

After trying several breeds of chickens in the past 2 years, I have come to the conclusion that the best type of chickens for me to have is a dual purpose breed. Faverolles really fit the bill as, though not prolific layers, they supply eggs steadily throughout the year and I don't have to worry about what to do with the culls since they make such good eating. Brahmas have become my second favorite breed for the same reasons. The only area in which the Brahmas out do the Faverolles is egg size. Both breeds are wonderful "yard art" and have friendly, laid back temperaments as well.
