Faverolles Thread

Interesting, from a European perspective, type and size are key elements when judging faverolles - a cockerel should come in at between 7.5lbs - 10lbs,thus reflecting the true heritage the faverolles, which were more of a"meat bird" in France.
Perfect colour in salmons is notoriously difficult to achieve,as the desired feather in an exhibition bird usually means useles in the breeding pen, so this means use "double mating" Running both cock and pullet breeding runs.
We don't have mahogany faverolles here, I would be interested in what the underfluff looks like?

I like your weight standard, 7.5 to 10 pounds. I believe our standard is 8 pounds plus or minus 2 pounds. I remember when I was a t Sue Brutons' we weighted a cockerel and he went 9.5 pounds and her cock bird weighed 11.5 pounds. Now there's a meat bird.
Dick

We eat most of our surplus cockerels, and they are lovely, normally grow them on till about 8months old as a rule, nice roasted, but just sublime as coq ay vin

Yes Sue Brutons birds are gorgeous, I just love her garden though....when were you at Sues Dick?

I know in that poultry magazine from Britain - Practical Poultry? - there have been several articles about folks breeding for exhibition over utility. What I get from it is that, yes, they all know they should breed for utility first, and a great many try to do that, but it quite often falls behind the exhibition traits because, well, the exhibition birds are so darn pretty! I think in Britain and Europe there will tend to be a heavier push for the utility of an animal over its looks - they are light years ahead of the States with regard to animal husbandry in farm animal food production - so I would not be surprised that they consider form and function more often than Americans.

Fun Fact: I read somewhere that in France there are certain recipes that can only be made with the meat from a faverolles - isn't that cool?

Wearing my red faverolles sweatshirt tomorrow at the Poultry Congress! How will I spot you, Dick?

I was over there, I think, in 94, 95 and 98. I went over to see the Faverolles Centenary show. I had my Faverolles hat on and Sue looked at me, looked at the hat, looked at me again, then looked at the hat and said your Dick Boulanger and I said yes. She said you didn't tell us you were coming. And I said no. HA. Sue said if I ever wanted to visit again I could stay with her and her husband Jesse. The Centenary show was in December and I went back the following May.
I love their place and I agree with you they do have beautiful gardens. Did meet some great breeders there. Les Bray, the Critchlows, Mr. Higgins, John Kraft, David Hill and Phillip whose last name escapes me. I visited all these people at their homes. Oh, how could I forget Mrs, Appleby. HA. Had a great time. Plan to go again.....hopefully soon.

That's my plan, too. How well I stick to that plan is another story.

But I'll be there! Looking forward to it.

Peter,

College went great! I got out in 3.5 years. So I've been out two years. I am selling liquid fertilizers and other products to farmers. One of our farmers bought a farm with a house on it and offered to let me rent it. It has a couple of small chicken houses on it that I am able to use. I will have my birds in the next couple of months. I have to clean extensively and build the pens the way I want.
I went to the APA national in Shawnee, OK last month with a couple of friends. I was expecting to see Sharon. She was not there. Maybe she's brewing up some real goods ones and will suprise everybody one day. I hope all is well.
The white Faverolles have beaten my salmons a few times. I just don't ever have them in condition to put them on champion row at the right times. I think between us and another guy we've probably got thirty or more out for crossroads.

Ok, here's some comic relief!

I ATTEMPTED to take some pics of the chicks today (collectively known as "The Dorks"). They didn't care for the flash so much!!!

They are 5 weeks old.
Notice the feet in the first pic. I really don't know which foot is the pullets (jutting out to the front, or to the back) and which one is the cockerels!!

And then in the 2nd pic, see the wing in the top left corner? That's called freak out fest when the flash goes off!!
