Here are two of Emmet's babies hatched in October (13 weeks) that I like best so far. Of course, I realize they may change a lot in 13 more weeks, but right now they are the ones I think look best of the batch of 10. Neither of them were exactly thrilled with a photo shoot as they are in the "touch me not" stage right now.

Are the "sooty-ness" or "ticking" of the beards, muffs, chest feathers can be bred out? Or would it come back to haunt the future generations?

We got 6" of snow, then icing. There's still freezing rain even now but at least the power is back on. I just hope the 4 hour outage didn't damage the eggs due to hatch in 4 days. More snow Friday too!

And finally for a color comparison between the 2 lines. Ron's line is darker, Dick's girls are lighter and have a creamy color breast.

Great pic's. Get the camera out again. I'd like to see a front pic of the bird on the bottom. Fav's look great in the snow...don't they!
I need to take pic's of my birds this week end.

It can be but I feel only on closed flocks. If you keep on bringing in new blood you never know what you will end up with. All kinds of things can creep up. If I was to bring in new blood, say a male, I would probably breed him to one or two hens,cull hard, and keep a few of what I think are the better young. Then I'd breed them to another small pen breeding. Those chicks would be 3/4 my line. Better chance of keeping control but then again you could still get some bad traits that would creep in. Years ago I had brought in birds from where ever I could get them. Granted you have to start some where. Bred a lot of crap for the next couple of years. It takes time and you have to know what you are looking for. I had copies of the standard and pictures posted in every coop. A great thing to have is someone else to look at your birds. Some times you can't see the tree through the forest. I remember one time we were going through my buddy, Eddie's bantams. He couldn't wait to show me this one bantam pullet he had. She was beautiful....if you liked yellow legs HA. He couldn't believe he missed that. This is why it's good to have the SOP with you. Post it in your coops or take it with you when ever your going to look over your birds.

Possible, but I don't think so. But I feel hens with black ticking in their beards will help produce males with blacker beards.

I will. I know they are waaay too young to tell much about. I am curious to compare these photos with their pics at 26 weeks just to see the changes. Planning to order the new SOP in a couple of weeks when it becomes available.
