If one has chickens long enough, one always loses that first roo. It's sad, but part of the process.

I know. It happens. When your chicken numbers grow though, it seems like it happens more often then when you first started.

I'm sorry for your loss Wannabchick and Elizmartin. ): Loosing a chicken always hurts. Especially Favs, with their sweet lovable personalities.

I've only had one broody Fav, and that was a bantam, but they are great mommas when they do go broody!!

7 fav eggs in lock down now. I heard peeping when I removed the egg turner. Yea! It will be my first "home laid" fav hatch. I have 3 hens and a roo from eggs I bought on this board last season.

Hopefully I will have eggs to put in the incubator again before too much longer. I have one hen molting and 2 pullets (22 weeks) that haven't started laying yet. The pullets are squatting now and their combs are quite red so it shouldn't be too long now. I have one lonely little Fav egg in the incubator that is due to hatch tomorrow (along with a few Fav cross eggs). I had two other Fav eggs at the start of incubation but they developed blood rings. These were the last 3 eggs my hen laid before she started molting. I wonder if that affects hatchability?

I just candled some test eggs, and my first buff project egg is developing AND my blue salmon cockerel is doing his job!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I have a buff orp roo in with my buff Fav girls, and I have a really young blue salmon cockerel in with the blue salmon girls. Just tested fertility at the same time.
