Hi all! Been away from here for a while due to school and the fact that I STILL can't get my email notifications after all this time. Frankly, I need the reminder in my mailbox! Anyway...

Trying to choose whether to attend Lucasville or the Ohio National this year. We're coming from NJ, so we can't afford to do both. Want to support the FFA, but we really love the National because of the size, and since we've been a few times, we know what to expect. I realize the APA NAtional will be in Lucasville this year, so that's a plus. And, I've heard that's it's a really lovely show. Unfortunately, everyone here is molting so badly it is unlikely I will have anything to enter, so I would be driving all that way with nothing, which makes the Ohio National - a month later - a more attractive option, for all of my breeds, not just the favs. See what a conundrum this is?

So - who is going to Lucasville that I might miss? Or, who might I meet up with at the Ohio National in Columbus?

Hi, i have semi retired from attending shows in another livestock breed but continue to support 4-H, FFA thru donations of items and funding for projects at events. Doesn't have to be much but every lil thing helps....eliz

With folks working on these new color crosses, are you finding differences in their personality and hardiness....

I also have a question about Mahogany Favs.......besides the several mixed birds,i have the trio from Sandhill that i am working with....the male is the typical red boy.....but the 2 girls are slightly different.... One is lighter chestnut brown with a white beard, the other is darker with the same darker colored beard.....Anyone know if there is/was a specific pattern for the female or is this now new territory again????? Does anyone have a preference????? in the interest of uniformity??????

I am trying to figure out the proper pullet coloring for the mahoganies myself. So far all of my girls start with a dark reddish brown beard that gets lighter as they mature. Here are my oldest two (hatched late Fall 2011):





And here are two from this May:




Would love to hear some others' ideas regarding mahogany coloring in pullets.

Thought I'd post a couple pics of the LF salmon pullets that I'm using for my LF black project. These are 2 Kable daughters that I wasn't planning on keeping, I put them in this other coop for "storage" and they just exploded! They are huge, just like their daddy was. Both of these girls were broody raised, and have already been broody themselves, once each. They are just now a year old...

I am not sure of the proper coloring in Mahoganies. Do you have blue somewhere in their background because that last picture of the pullet seems to have some blue tail feathers. Just wondering. Dick would be more of an expert on the mahogany coloring as he bred bantams years ago.

Wow they look like nice big girls. So your putting a large bantam black male in with them. Wonder how long it will take to get the size back up? They look to have nice type so hopefully that carries over into the next generation.

I would say there isn't a standard for mahogany faverolles and no real mahogany colored hens in other breeds especially with beards. I guess we can kind of make up a standard as we go haha. I wonder if the beard should be mahogany colored or black or white? I prefer the look of a more solid colored beard. Not white I think it should be black or solid red.

Thank is just my personal preference since the pullets seem to have red/ mahogany breasts. Just like the salmons I think the beards should be the same color as the breast as in the salmons.

What do you guys that are breeding mahoganies think?

I'm not breeding them, but I agree with this.

Also, on the males is the white on the wingtips replaced with red?
