Faverolles Thread

I am glad you asked for a picture. It is amazing how different things are when you take a photo. The photo does not show it to well, but now I do not think the toe is a s short as I thought. I will be keeping an eye on them.

They do seem a little short to me though.
I have a similar case at home....irritating, she's a beautiful pullet... I'll have pics posted tomorrow, submitted for your scrutiny!

Hopefully, I'll see her in the morning and it won't look so bad.

Good to hear everyone. I do not know why I am so nervous about these chicks. Guess it is my first breeding attempt.

I better give my Mom a call. I made her think we were going to have to replace the roo. She gets a little attached.

So what is it with the 5th toe anyway.? I know it is SOP but given the placement it looks about as functionally useful as an appendix. Seems like something that was originally a "sport" and probably being dominant, somehow became "required".

I really don't know where the 5th toe came from in chickens. I'd say it's likely nobody really knows, since it's been there so long. I mean, we know where it came from in Favs, but where it originated...who knows...

Ok, I got a few pics of toes for the critics out there - Cull hard! Be merciless! I can take it

This is pullet 1, lighter than the other...all of her toes have contact with the ground - DQ? Pic 4, look at the spacing on each foot, not a match....

Pullet 2, the darker one. Look at pic 3, the right foot toe placement....

Darn, that's too bad, because I really do like that first pullet, and they both look like they've got great beards...and the salmon color is more even on the 2nd one...

On the first one, that looks like something called duck foot, and yes, that's a DQ, because all of her toes are facing forward & touching the ground, like a duck...

That being said...if you had a great male with really great toes, you could try them, and see what they give you...BUT this would also require culling at the incubator if it doesn't work...are you willing to do that? If not, I'd suggest not using them... but let's see what everyone else has to say.....

Culling newborn chicks, oh that sounds awful! - I have to get used to the idea though, if I'm going to make improvements....

The first one is my favorite too.... she's such a sweetie, a little shy though..... the second one is fiesty! She pecks at me when I try to touch her - she acts like I'm gonna eat her!

I tried to get pics of the male, but he's kinda shy of the other boys and when they come out to see me, he runs and hides like they're after him.....nonsense! I was looking at his comb today, I don't think it passes muster... I'll get some of him later, however, he does have really good feet.

Yes, let's hear from anyone who has an opinion - what would ya'll do with these girls?
