You might try looking at the legs, right up where the feather line is - see if there's any "critters" hiding in there.... Honestly, I surprised they don't pick more often. When I look at the shaft of those feathers - they look painful... ouch.

I looked really closely and didn't see anything, but it was kind of a mess. I am thinking of shampooing the legs with Adams flea and tick shampoo then reapplying the oil when and if they start looking a little less bloody. I have 5 favs and there are only two doing it.

They are definitely getting pulled out, either by them or the others. I just don't see the other chickens pulling out feathers that low. Head, tail feathers yes but all the way up the leg and down the outside toe. I don't know. When I looked, I could see the hole where the feather used to be. It does kind of gross me out. And now the younger cockerels legs and feet look awful, and very painful. I am going to get some bag balm or something like that to put on too. They were looking so good, I don't know what happened.

I did have them in the run with the others all day today, so maybe they did get picked out by them. I closed off their section tonight and will leave it like that for the week to see if things start looking better. Then I will try again to let thim integrate.

Probably, but the two EE's and the Sexlink have been with the pullet and cockerel pair I brought home for awhile now, and their legs are fine. These are two of the ones I hatched. It mught be just that they are younger and "new". I have plenty of time for integration, so there is no hurry, if that is the problem. I hope that is what it is anyway.

What if anything do you think I should put on them? Any good stuff you know of?

I used an antiseptic spray on my hatchery boy when his were really bad, but it burns apparently, because he got to where he would run away from me when he saw the white spray can

I can't remember what it was called, but I bought it at the feed store, and it was pretty spendy...there's always blukote if they are getting picked at by the others, and that has some antiseptic properties as well, and would get "critters" if that were the problem...


eta...you might also try Vetrycin wound spray. I haven't used it myself, but have heard really good things about it...

Poor guy! It made me laugh when I read that!

Reminds me of when I was a kid and had scraped my knees and would run from my mom who had the spray to put on it. She eventually caught me every time!
