Faverolles Thread

This is the 2nd SF I've had, this year, that has turned sour on me...

I do have a nice, big coop, with multiple levels and spaces - if things got rough between them, I do have 2 other smaller coops with runs, I could put a few in there.... I have about 17 hens all together... I just thought for a quarantine & introduction time, they might need to share a place.

Deal! Bring 'em!
The older one and the youngsters?

Yeah, I always keep boys together. I wouldn't put the older cockerel in with these younger ones (if you want both ages) but these younger boys, keep them together, and they will be fine. My breeding pen ALWAYS has multiple males in it. There are three in my big coop right now. Wasn't sure how that was going to go, because I had a 4 month old cockerel in there that was raised by a broody, and I put in the two 7 month old cockerels that I had hatched from Peter in there a few weeks ago, funny thing was, the two Merlin boys (who had been together since they hatched) started sparring with each other when I first put them in the big coop, but have never seemed to notice the younger boy. LOL (They've worked it all out now and get along just fine)...

Ok, so here's what happened....

I went out to feed this morning and stepped into the run. - My roo came at me like a mad man... he's totally lost his mind! I saw him coming out of the corner of my eye and I blocked his attack. He jumped at me 3x before I grabbed hold of him, growling and snarling (to scare him). I pushed him to the ground, kinda rough and held his head down in the dirt (he fought like crazy). I kinda shook him around a little making a lot of noise. Then I grabbed him up real quick and tossed him back in the run. He ran under the coop and hid!

He's about 6 months old. My BF said this last weekend that the roo chased at him....now I know.

What would you do? - And, does anyone have a good replacement they'll part with? I need a back up cockerel anyway....PeeWee thinks he's a pullet, I'm sure of it

At 6 months he hasn't crowed or chased a girl

I think everyone else is right eat him and get another male from Cloverleaf. That is what I would do. Never breed aggressive birds it doesn't do good things for the breeds reputation.

The boys are 6 months old! I can't wait to see them next time I get a chance to head out to my friends farm. She said they have started mating with her laying flock and become the head males. Hopefully they have grown into their colors a little more solidly and the male I like has gotten nice and big. We will see I guess.

Hi! I have a Lav Orp roo that is about 7 months old and he has always been really sweet up until a few days ago
gig.gif
He outright flogged me from behind while I was gathering eggs
gig.gif
I turned around really quick and snatched him up into the air right in front of my face and shook him gently but told him in a really loud snarly voice that I eat chicken every day for dinner and that I have over a 1000 chicken recipes then I pitched him across the run and glared at him till he backed away even further. He has not repeated the attack

Earlier in the year we had a Welsummer roo who started attacking my hubby first then me and nothing we could do would stop the brutal assaults. My legs looked like I had run through razor wire from his violent attacks

. I hear he was a tasty stew for the man we sent him too

. Orps and Favs are known to be sweet and gentle so I would give him every chance

My Fav Mooch is a real sweet sugar of a roo

He lets you stroke his chest and takes treats from your hand. Even the lady hens appreciate how gentle he is

Hi Melissa! I appreciate the consideration, but this year I've had so many problems with roos attacking.....and there are so many good boys that need a good home. I'd rather take the others and eat this guy....

How old are these cockerels? The older and the younger ones? - And what is their breeding/lineage?

The 2 younger ones they can stay together for a week or so and keep each other warm at night....The other guy would be alone for a bit..... Decisions, decisions....hmmmm

Snapped a few photos today. Hope everyone is having a good one and all your birds are growing. I made butter today and the girls got the buttermilk. They also got some skim leftover from skimming the cream. I hope its adding some more protein to the diet and they can get nice and fat before winter starts.

Apparently they love calendula leaves, lavendar, thyme, and sage. Never had chickens go after these plants when grass was readily available before. Herb fed chickens?

Lovely ladies. They look very happy. I miss having Fav hens. I can hardly wait for some more.

I am pretty excited about my boys growing up. I am pretty sure one is from a cockerel I almost kept. He just did not have enough size. I do not think his son has that same problem.

Here is his brother...
