Favorite Bugs to Eat :D

Grasshoppers (which are also extremely entertaining

) and any kind of worms. Those are the favs.

However, anything that crawls, wiggles, hops, or happens to fly by are subject to immediate demise!

Our chickens LOVE Earth Worms!!! One of our BO pullets, Caramel, especially went crazy over them!

When she saw us holding one while it was wiggling around, she would run over and gulp it down in one bite! She even freaked out over things that looked like worms; like thin twigs, etc. Crazy girl...!

All the chickens love those flying ants, too. When one flew by to land on the potato plants, they would all dash after it, trying to jump up at it! LOL we had a lot last summer and it was hysterical to watch them all running around and jumping up in the air!

And one of the most disgusting things that they like(especially our RIR rooster...) is Japanese beetle larva...It is the most gross beetle that I have ever seen! Gives me the creeps all the time! Here's a pic: http://entomology.unl.edu/images/seedpest/phyllgrub.jpg And they also love eating the adult Japanese beetles: http://georgiafaces.caes.uga.edu/graphicsfiles/JapanBeetlePurduelr.jpg

It's amazing what chickens can eat; they are truly the masters of that Fear Factor show...!

i have seen chicken FIGHT over centipedes and scorpions!!! oohhh they love them scorpions!!!!

i ususally feed small crickets to my 2-3 day old chicks.. gets them pecking at things and gives them a good protien meal..

I hate those little larvae things! They kill plants, flowers, grass, etc. They are know to chew up a lot of plants roots, etc. and can cause lots of damage!

PLUS, they bite...HARD! I've never been bitten, but they have a massive pincher on their hard heads, and if you stick your finger in there....ooohhh it's gonna hurt, I can tell you that!

When I stick a twigs in their pincher, they clamp down really hard.

And they are really big! It's strange because they are bigger than the adult beetle...?

But when we feed them to our rooster, he can't really eat it in one bite because it's so fat.

I know of one "bug" that my chickens won't touch, ladybugs. We get millions of ladybugs dumped on us (by helicopter!) twice a year by Weyerhauser Timber Co.
Every vertical surface, including the coop, is covered in them right now and the chickens won't touch them; even when I try to hand feed them.

My chickens come running when they see the Black Soldier Fly Larvae bucket. They can't eat them fast enough! It's like they're afraid they won't get their fair share. I got my last big batch in January and just a few every now and then since; not enough to even call it a snack.

Any bug that moves, and anything that looks like it might have been a bug at one point in time.

Crickets are a special favorite, i have one rir who catches one and then spends the next 15 minutes running around screaming because she can't find a "safe" place to eat it. It's hilarious, she does it for so long the others actually seem to lose interest in what she has, it's like they think she's just crazy or something. It's hilarious.
