Favorite duck breed and why?

it depends on what exactly you want em for :p I have khakis, and they lay eggs like crazy. laid almost 18 months an egg a day, literally nonstop (theyre now taking a deserved break since late december :p )
they arent too friendly, unless you have food, except one doesnt mind being picked up and cuddled
then I have some appleyards, which are lovely. such complex feathers. more than half the pretty feathers Ive collected from my flock are just from those two :p
and then two saxonies. ones not so friendly (she tolerates hugs every so often. but make em short), but the other is :love she letss me pick her up without running away, and if Ive got a worm, shes the only one to come running without any hesitation

I love all my ducks

I just want them for eggs and maybe to pet (not cuddle so much - I've got dogs for that. Lol) But, I would like friendly birds.
I think they would be great fun to watch.
Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Muscovy's are like puppies my drake loves to cuddle and my females eat out of my hand.

My Runners are the clowns of the property they just make me laugh every day. It's one for all and all for one with that group.

The 2 female Buffs were hatched with the Runners so they think that is who they are. They are my loud ones but I love their hahaha that is what it sounds like when they belt it out[Someone is out there cracking jokes.]
Thank you for sharing! I love all the duck stories. So, you have ducks and chickens?

Probably Welsh Harlequins. They're a good sized duck, not overly fat and not so light they get into mischief with their wings. I love their plumage, plus they're good layers (just not in winter) of large eggs. They're sweet and they get along well with flockmates.

Silver Appleyards are another favourite of mine. They're big and goofy.
Thanks for sharing. I think the welsh harlequins are pretty too! It sounds like you really can't go wrong with picking a duck breed to add.

I think so too. I have had Welsh Harlequins, two varieties of Swedish, three varieties of Ancona, Silver Appleyards, Mallard mixes, mule ducks, Muscovies, and a Snowy Call, and they're all lovely.

Muscovys. They are quiet, prolific breeders, and great eating. My trio consists of a 3 year old drake and two 10 year old hens. My two girls typically hatch 50-60 plus duckling in a year. They usually set three times. Most of all they are quiet and did I mention they are quiet. I can't stand quackin ducks.

From your signature, I take it you have quite the "farm". Do you only have the 3 ducks then? Does the trio work out well (in reference to mating?) I dont really need ducklings, but I guess I have to think about the genders of the ducks I do want to get.

A trio of Muscovys works great for me. They hatch more than I need so I have plenty to sell. The drake only mates them a time or two a week that I see anyhow. And they are never torn up from over mating. In fact the only evidence that he is mating "aside from fertile eggs and ducklings lol" is his dirty foot prints on their backs. No missing or torn up feathers. With no competition for breeding rights he doesn't feel the need to mate them every ten minutes. As soon as they hatch I take them away and with in a week or two they are setting again. These two girls hatched 66 duckling "set three times" in 2016. I've had some hatches, of a single hen, over 20 in one setting before as well.

Calls. Besides their obvious adorable appearance. They are inquisitive, friendly, and small. Their small size makes them proportionally less messy than their larger cousins in my experience. None of mine weigh over 1.5 lbs. They are very vocal, hence the name, so depending on the proximity to neighbors that could be a downfall. They are by FAR my most favorite fowl on the farm. :love

khakis might work then :p spend a lot of time with em and hopefully end up with a cuddly
one like I got ;P
Oh they are tons. it rained the last two days and they were having so much fun in my low lying property. took em for walks out the pen to dabble in the mud, and even swim a bit. had a lot of fun ;)
No problem! good luck!
