Favus or Thrush?

Thank you. I’ve just seen her gaping, is this the mareks also? She’s been wormed with vermizoo in a litre of drinking water but I’ve not given her anymore. Should I ask the vet to test her, euthanise her, I don’t want to lose her but I don’t want to see her suffer either. Don’t know if I can get to a vet as I’ve no car, half an hours walk to the local one who only opens Friday. 😞

She was gaping this morning, can anyone tell me if she might be suffering? I presume her sister is likely to have it too?

Are both of her eyes grey? So sorry that she seems to be having trouble breathing or gaping. If she seems to be suffering, putting her down might be something to consider. That is only up to you. Could your vet get testing or a necropsy to confirm if she has Mareks?

Weight loss is another classic symptom of Marek's. It can cause tumors on organs as well as the outward symptoms, and this hinders normal organ functions. I fear your hen may be close to the end. I urge you to locate your nearest agriculural lab.

Find the lab and if it's within a few hours drive, you can drive your hen there alive, and they will euthanize her and perform a necropsy and be able to tell you if this is Marek's. If it is, your flock now carries it.

Thank you so much for both replies. First, just the one eye is blue yes. Second, I cannot get to the vet today but tomorrow we’ve an appointment at 12.30 and my friend is taking me. She’s eaten very little today. I saw her shaking her head a few times which I believe is a symptom? Yes, she’s getting more poorly but the gaping seemed to stop after that period in the morning. I’ll let you know what the vet says. She’s an avian vet and I’m sure she’ll do tests if she thinks that’s best but yes, it might be goodbye tomorrow and I’m so sorry I can’t get this done today.

It can be very expensive going through a local vet to get testing, but that is great if it is affordable. Mareks testing is probably less expensive, getting it with a necropsy through your state vet lab. Let us know what your avian vet thinks. Here is a link for most state vets that do necropsies:

RAL lab in Texas can send you materials to collect a blood sample from a trimmed toenail, and return it for pcr Mareks testing for about $40. Here is a link for them:

Thanks everyone fir the advice and support I truly don’t know what I’d have done without you. You’re all amazing.

Oh eggcessive, I’m not in the states unfortunately as I know your animal care is way superior, I’m in Portugal where they admit to having less knowledge and resources
