Fawn With Bloody Stool?? Help Please!!!!

My dad just brought a fawn home today that he found in the road laying down he bought milk replacer should we not use it?

AARGH!

Enough with the milk replacer is the source of all evil!

I honestly dont understand where it is coming from. I have raised literally hundreds of babies of all species on replacer just fine. No problems, and I am proud to say my bottle babies look better than anyone elses in this area.

Its really really crucial to get the right milk replacer - at the VERY LEAST 20% fat 20% protein - higher is better. Dont scrimp on the cost here. And no soy based products. All milk.

I'm in Australia but if I were in America I'd use MannaPro Nurse All

24% protein, 24% fat

I've only ever raised one fawn before ... didnt have problems like you are mentioning, but I'd be wondering about coccidiosis. Do a bit of research or talk to the vet perhaps.

Keep an eye on him for dehydration!

How did you get yours to take the milk? Our fawn just licks it off his/her lips but I definatly don't think its getting enough. I think my dad got to big of a bottle its a calf bottle for cows.

I would try a human size baby bottle - You will probably have to poke a bigger hole in the nipple. I think the calf bottle/nipple would be overwhelming for such a wee baby. Try to imagine the size of a mama deer's teats....(I know I've never seen them hanging down like a cow's! (LOL))!

Try lamb nipples. Worked great with the little raccoon I'm rehabbing right now. They just slip on a water bottle. We bought them at our local feed store.

the biggest thing with fawns is you need to stimulate them to toilet before they drink - wipe their rear with a warm washcloth until they go - then offer the bottle, otherwise they feel too full and arent hungry

as for teats ... here in Australia we get huge pinky coloured calf teats that are really thick ... and we get small thin black ones that can be used for small calves, and big lambs and kids. I used the small thin black one for my fawn, he did great

you could also try the excal topper teat, or a human baby bottle (silicon teats usually go better, but you could try latex as well)

A lambs nipple on a soda bottle works great. We used Purina milk replacer. They actually make one with a fawn ( as well as goats etc.) on the label. We've raised three to maturity. They do great, but you do need to stimulate defacation with a warm wash cloth. it's not a big deal. They are wonderful pets, and can be rehabilitated well.

I have raised many baby goats on cows milk and many calves on goat milk. They both did just fine. From what I have read, deer milk is richer than cow milk or dairy goat milk. Both run about 3.5% butterfat. The formula I gave for the store milk with buttermilk and evap added is often used for Boer kids and mini goat (Nigerian and Pygmy) babies. Both mini goats and Boers produce a richer milk than dairy goats. Therefore those babies do better with the formula than standard store milk. I would think the same would be true for baby deer.

I would find a local rehabber and get him into rehab ASAP! In many states it's illegal to raise wildlife without a license, so you might want to check into that. I've heard the fines can be pretty steep. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I used to own a Red Deer farm, and we would get orphins about every year. We would use sheep replacer(dont know if that is the same as goat) and it did realy good. As long as the got the chlosterum they needed they were usually fine. Good Luck to you!!
