FBCM chicks on craigslist

Here's a picture of the eggs... what do y'all think? Yes, or no? (They look a little light to me to be considered a 6.)

Four things I would consider in order of importance:

Are any of the hens mossy?

Something to avoid if you don't want Black Copper Marans that might be mixed with wheatens. Mossy means not pure black on their body and the mossiness is near impossible to breed out.

Do any of the roos have straw hackles?

While hard to see, the one visible roo looks pretty decent, better than many actually with nice comb and tail angle. Most importantly from the picture he doesn't appear to have straw hackles, there are a lot of them out there, which is a disqualification for the proposed APA standards

Are they feather legged?

They should have feathered shanks down the outer toe only for French standard.

How dark are the eggs?

The egg color shown could be darker but probably qualifies on the Marans egg color chart.

$10-$12 seems to be a fair price for instant Marans gratification especially if someone is breeding to proposed APA standards.

At this point in time buying the "Wade Jeane line" or C1 and C2 can mean anything. For the most part they have been long removed from Wade Jeane and mass bred for the last few years. It could be the Tom and Mary Jones line at this point unless you are getting them from someone close to Wade Jeane like Charles Logan or mydarkeggs.com

Don't have a clue what BKA stands for???

There are nearly 1,400 listings for Black Copper Marans on craigslist, I'd probably check some ads to see how they compare but the price seems fair unless they have mossy or straw hackle parents, either of which would be a deal breaker.

Sorry... this is what they were advertised as on craigslist. Well, more specifically "French Marans". I thought it was a pretty well known abbreviation, or I wouldn't have used it.
