We are having a problem with our hens (one year old Silver Laced Wyandotts) plucking their feathers from their backs. Some of them have bare spots from their tail feathers half way up their backs extending all the way across from wing to wing. We have 22 hens and 2 roosters in a run that is 24’ X 32’, the plucking started before the roosters were introduced to the flock. The chickens have access to laying mash, grit, calcium and a flock block all the time, daily we give them a little cracked corn that we scatter in the run. About 3 or 4 times a week they get table scraps, at least weekly they get greens of some type. We have 2 hens and a rooster in a tractor with a 4’ X 8’ run that we move to fresh grass 2 to 3 times a week. The 2 hens in the tractor are also plucking their feathers. This has been going on for about two months and we are at a loss as to what to do.
