Hi, my name is Dawn and my husband and I are once again enjoying having some chickens--just four hens--after many years without any. When we moved to Wisconsin 25 years ago, we kept about a dozen layers and cycled through a goodly number of "meat" birds. We have an acre of home and yard in the suburbs now and the girls have a space in the back near the compost pile( which they LOVE). The suburbs don't lend themselves to total free range, but we try to let them have some outside time when we can.
We have a couple of Adirondack chairs over by the coop which provide a comfortable spot for us to watch the "chicken channel." Amazing what that can do for your blood pressure! We have two Buff Orps, named Blondie and Butterscotch and two Silver Wyandottes, named Flora and Dora. Here's a pic of the coop we built.
