3 of my 4 hens have this damage on tail feathers. I assumed this happened because for 2 days at sub zero temps I kept them locked up in the coop which led to boredom and pecking. However I wonder if this kind of damage is unusual- it is so symmetrical. Any thoughts?

It is probably pecking from boredom like you said. There’s no need to keep them locked in the coop; chickens keep themselves warm. Just leave the coop door open so they can go in and out - and offer some protein supplementation like canned tuna, scrambled eggs or mealworms. Feathers are made from mostly protein.

I know just what to do! This has been happening to me for a LONG time! Take a Q-tip and some anti-bacterial cream. Rub it in the injured spot. Wait a few minutes. Then cover the injury with blue-kote. Just watch out! Blue-kote does not come off hands that well! If you do get it on your hands, take Suave hand sanitize and wash your hands. That should help!👍😉:ya
