FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Today is lock down! We've had 2 confirmed losses - (my almost 3yr old son woke up in the middle of the night & wanted to hear the "baby eggs" & took all the eggs out to listen to them then dropped 4 - woke up to hearing him say baby eggs hear? hear? no ->The 2 others are prob dead because one has cracking & there was a little blood & the other just has cracking - we'll see

The rest are doing just fine I suppose
I cannot see anything inside my EE eggs they are all filled up - my JB eggs tho are so light I can still see my wriggly fuzzy butts in there!
& hopefully the quail egg is good because it's all dark too

I went w/ a lower humidity this hatch (started @ 50 & only added water once & it has slowly made it's way to about 37% so far so good by doing that -
will be bringing it up into 60-70 range for lockdown last hatch it went up to 76% which I wasn't too happy about but too late for change that hatch. (I'll have to do a few more this way to see if it really makes a diff.
W/ my last hatch I kept the humidity @ a constant 50-55 & they were alright in the moving/activity this hatch w/ the lower humidity all the developing eggs seemed to be training for a swim meet!

I'm soo excited & normally I would be swarming the bator now getting lockdown ready but one of my buns kindled this morning & I have 4 new babies to ooogle at & keep me distracted enough.
I know eggs chicks & such but I gotta show off my lil nuggets they are Netherland dwarfs

More pics when they are fuzzy!!! Congrats!

I just candled this morning. 12/15 RIR looked good, 1/2 brahmas (one actually had a fatty looking drip hanging off of it
sickbyc.gif
) and 10/15 mutts looked good.

I am waiting for day ten to remove them, excepting the 'drip' egg. That came out.

It is good to take the plugs out at lockdown because the chicks need air. It makes humidity a little tougher, but you will have a much better hatch when they can get some air.
x2. I keep both out for the entire hatch. I am at high elevation and I would rather refill the water more often than suffocate chicks in the egg. We don't have as much oxygen up here so every bit counts.

CAN MY HATCHES BE SAVED?

Hi. I joined this group a few weeks back and posted a few times, but holy cow, I just can't keep up with all the msgs here, lol.

Today I have a few questions of my own.

1) I have a broody on 7 eggs. They were due to hatch yesterday. One hatched during the day and one overnight. How long should I leave the remaining eggs in hopes that they will hatch? It's interesting that the only ones that have hatched so far are the ones I did not ever candle. I'm wondering if I handled the others too much. I candled only 4 times, tho. There was movement in some of the ones that have not hatched as late as the last candle over the weekend, tho I only candled 2 of the 7 that day.

2) I have 20 more eggs in the incubator. I took the word of the person I got it from that it was calibrated, so even tho my thermometer showed temp a little low (95 not 99) I trusted the brinsea thermostat. (I know, rookie mistake but...well, I'm a rookie.) Put eggs in to start on Saturday pm. Candled just a few (6?) yesterday saw minimal development in some and no dev in others. Put another thermometer in there and it, too, showed 95 degrees. I turned up the brinsea thermostat to 102 in order to get temp up on auxilary thermometer to 99. Will that much temp difference affect the early development? And if so, is there hope that the eggs can 'catch up' now? Should I wait til say, sunday, then candle and toss duds?

TIA for all the expert advice I'm sure to get!

Have you calibrated the thermometers you are using? Even though your friend said that the incubator was calibrated your environment may be different from hers and would give you different readings.

I guess that's what I was trying to say. That I depended on the brinsea being right, but 2 other thermometers have now indicated that for the first 3 days the temp was probably 5 degrees low, so 95 when it should have been 99. Woudl that be why I'm not seeing development? And if so, if i correct the temp (which I did last night) do the eggs still have a chance to develop normally?

Quote: I did have this in 2 of my silkie eggs when Peeps hatched. When I did opened the rest of the eggs to see why they didn't hatch I saw this in the bottom of 2 shells. The chicks were shrink wrapped (cause I opened bator several times to help Peeps after she had been pipped & stuck for over 20 hours) anyway, it looked like both these were double yolk eggs? Only 1 yolk in each developed into fully developed chicks. 1 of them the 2nd yolk looked like it tried to develop part way. I guess there was not enough room for 2 in each egg. But I do know of a few ppl in the past that BOTH yolks developed & BOTH chicks hatched. Could be whats in your egg? Not sure
