FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

the pic above with the eggs in that red bubble wrap (which looks awesome, btw) is hopw probably half my eggs have come. in that set up I have only had one cracked egg out of a few dozen. The eggs from yesterday could have used more bubble wrap for sure, but in the sellers defense, she is pretty new to shipping, and, I am on the end of the mail route for my mailman and he/she is often a BRUTE with packages...and lazy! I seen many times over the holidays where he/she would leave BIG packages teetering in between two mailboxes (side by side mail boxes) and the two neighbors would be left to honestly decide who is belonged to. *sigh* But yes, the packaging above (your pic) is I think, the most ideal way of packing!

ETA: the new bator works great so far....maybe TOO great....lol....luckily I have learned a *tiny* bit of patience so far in this hatching game, so I waited all night to leave it on and see where we were....turns out, the 25w bulb made the thermometer max out at over 120* within a few hours....soooo....gonna try a 15w today. Any ideas on how to keep the temp down? This is a small foam cooler (it's an Omaha Steaks cooler....and no...sadly it wasn't me chowing down on Omaha steaks) and it is only about 2ft/18" in size. (the plus side is, is by being patient this week it only cost me 4.00 to make it so far! lol!!!)

Do you have air holes in it? I would add a computer fan to circulate the air also.

We went to TSC yesterday and I bought 6 little babies!!!! I got 4 Straight run chicks, The sign said Gold sex link. I don't know about that, 1 banty it said assorted, so I don't know what breed, it has feathers on its legs, and 1 out of the pullet bin, it said assorted, but from the looks of it I think it may be RIR, but I am not sure!!!!! They are so cute! Here are some pics!

Oh my goodness, they are adorable!! Love the pics!!

You'd think TSC would do better at labeling the bins. Maybe I'm just spoiled by our local farm store. They label each bin with the specific breed and they are all pullets, they don't even do straight runs. If you want a RIR, they have a bin for that, Isa brown... different bin, etc. There's still a small risk of getting a rooster... but only from the hatchery sorting - and it's never happened to anyone I know yet. Plus they let you sort though all the chicks and check them out as you please without interference. They'll just hang around in case you have questions or to hold the box for you to drop in babies. I don't think I'll be going to TSC this year either.

Love the fuzzy butt pics!!

17 eggs went into lockdown today. All are the eggs from the incubator whose bulb burned out and was discovered until the eggs were cold and the temp was 74* These are the survivors! There are some of 5 our EEs, 2 Ameraucana, 2 RIR, 2 Speckled Sussex, 1 bantam Langshan, 4 Welsummer, and 1 Icelandic (1st of our own). They may be a day late, but I am so happy that these survived

Cynthia - Did I miss how your barred rocks are doing?

My little runt chick from TSC was dead this morning! He had been doing so well, guess he was just not strong enough. He was the tiniest chicks I've ever seen!

I expect regular updates! ***grabs the Tums and puts on the desk -- on second thought, I'd better take 2 now for preemptive measures!***

Thanks 3D and inthesticks....

I have no idea about the yolk rotting...thats why I am concerned that what did survive my postman is COVERED in it!

Inthesticks I love the "ornamental" rabbit breeds, but I make my money off the meaties...although I dont care what ANYONE says, a NZW is an AWESOME pet quality rabbit! My Buck will follow me around the yard like a little dog! LOL!!!
I would wipe them w/ a damp paper towel & then wipe again w/ a dry one right after - I have had to clean a few eggs before putting them in - W/ the yolk being on the eggs, it will dry up & crust in the bator - if the crust gets wet then that's another story -
@ the beginning of this current incubation I had an egg crack open & as soon as that dang yolk hit the water it was DISGUSTING!!!!!!! I had to remove the eggs & turner then clean out the base.

I want to eventually add meat rabbits to my mini farm, buns of all shapes & sizes! Awww a doggy bun.Your absolutely correct, big buns make great pets too! .
I am really happy right now! Of the 12 shipped eggs I received, 11 show development today (day 7). One has a crack that I just noticed, so I tried to put some tape over it. I think it may be developing, but I'm not sure. It may have died - I will keep an eye on it and recheck in 10 days.

Good luck with the tape egg.

x2 Day 7 was also around when I dropped an egg on top of the others & panicked & electrical taped the area, now I have a chicken named Tape!
Now this batch my son dropped 2 eggs & one got smashed up it bled - but for some miracle both are alive & moving around even w/ one of the eggs having a giant hole in it & the outer membrane (they are due the 17th & a few on the 18th) I didn't bother w/ any tape because the incident happened on Tues night. Here's to our chicks pulling thru & making it out!!!
