FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Oh that is great about the web cam- never heard of a school having that. When my daughter was in 2nd grade her class did a hatch, they ended up w/ over 100 chicks- most parents wouldn't or couldn't let their kids have them.... so naturally my daughter said "oh my mama will let me take some"- oh yea we got 23 of the most butt ugly chicks you've ever seen LOL they were just barnyard mixes given to the school- apparently not good mixes!
aww. Share some pictures of these "butt ugly" chicks. XD I never seen a chicken that was truly ugly before. (Except for the ones that aren't healthy)

Not even 1 day and I made a mistake. Thankfully, I was able to fix it before it was to late. The exact reason I decided to hatch these eggs was so I could get the hang of hatching for my Bantam eggs I plan on hatching this summer, and to learn from my mistakes.
What was the mistake? what ever it was glad you got it fixed! I heard that you learn something new w/ each hatch, so far I'm finding that to be true!

Ha! I will have to look back in the albums to see if I ever took pics of them- that was yrs ago, my daughter is 18 now. but I am telling you, they were truly ugly- ugly chicks grew into UGLY adults! Poor things, but they were excellent layers- some must have had EE in them some where cause 2 laid sort of blue-green eggs, 1 was a pink egg, very pretty (the eggs I mean)

And I agree, most chickens are attractive, some are beautiful- some breeds just appeal to me more than others... BUT not those chickens!

You are as bad as me LOL I am bidding now on 2 different sets of Polish! I said the basque would be my last... well & of course the calls ducks- BUT bantam polish, any color, was on my original list. Until now I didn't find any eggs reasonable enough, so I had kind of given up hope, until this morning - So ok, if I get these they just have to be the last- cause I only have room enough for so many pens- I want to keep each breed by itself so they don't mix. So far w/ what I have now in chicks & eggs, plus the 1's on the way I will need 8 coops! Oh my, Lars (hubby) is gonna be busy building
Thats the thing....... where do you go with them all? and since i build myself i am getting tired of building new coops and runs ! they are all in tractors(5) but would like to stop and expand some runs for all of them as they dont have lots of room as much as id like anyway. I built some large cages in my bath which i hope to take apart in spring and make into more tractor coops but if i keep getting chicks that I want to keep not sell i wouldnt be able to use them
Oh well it all works out .but now the bathroom 4 diff brooders and 2 more batches have to be in there soon...GUHGH
where will they go? Havent figured it out yet

I checked out her page, they are beautiful. I msg her to ask if she has eggs availible, if so I want to get some! Now that my bator prob. is 'fixed', maybe I'll have better luck

She has eggs listed for sale in the Buy/Sell/Trade area on BYC. They are a little pricey but the chicks are well worth it.

Roxanne my spare bedroom now has 8 brooders in it!!! I bought those 55 Gallon storage containers ($18 @ Walmart) and cut 2 squares in the lid and attach hardware cloth. I usually keep the lid off until they start testing their wings. I walked in one day and there were like 10 chicks sitting all along the top edge.

A few min ago, I checked the 3 eggs- last night I had 2 rocking a bit. This morning nothing- but I had a feeling that since I had that prob. w/ shrink wrap chicks Tues, that maybe I should make a small hold to check. The 1st egg, shrink wrapped membrane w/ chick that died b/f full development. 2nd egg, again shrink wrapped, but fully formed- dead! It was also upside down, very large chick- It must have gotten stuck. Then I am panicking so opened 3rd egg- shrink wrapped but still alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went ahead, peeled membrane back a tiny bit just to give the chick some air- and it really started moving & cheeping!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wrapped the egg it warm wet paper towel, returned it to the bator. I saw a little blood, but now it's stopped free bleeding. I've still got a chance w/ this one Thank You Lord! If I had not opened it, I have no doubt I would have had a dead chick. My Grandma always said 'go with you gut feeling- always, in all things'
I am hoping that all the eggs in the big bator will have a chance now that I've fixed the humidity prob. I have more my 2nd set of lav orps going into lock down tomorrow!

And yea! My mar. basque eggs arrived a few min ago too!
