FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

The 25 watt doesn't get too hot - the cooler itself is 22"x15" and 15" tall with the lid on. It was one that medicine was shipped in to a local doctor's office. I was supposed to throw it away but I can't bring myself to do that so I always bring them home and find a good use for them.

I have lots of stuff stored in my sheds in them..... I had a 40W bulb at first and it got up to 113 in just under an hour - 25 is perfect for this size cooler.......

I built this not even thinking I need a thermostat but now everyone has me convinced I need one.

It's working without it so I don't know......and it's only a 25W bulb.....not too much electricity......

It will use even less once you get a thermostat because the bulb won't be on all the time. The thermostat regulates your temp once you set it. The bulb only comes on when the temp drops to your set point.

what u hatching out i am hatching some lavender cochins some lavender amercuanas and have some salmon favorelles

I am just hatching out a barnyard mix for this round - I grabbed eggs from my coop and tossed them in there. I woke up one morning and decided I wanted to hatch some eggs, so I built an incubator and put the eggs in - I have two roo's - a BO and a BR. My hens are just BR, BSL, EE (although I only have 4 EE eggs in there) and RIR. I am giving 50 eggs to the school next door next month and before I did that, I wanted to make sure that my eggs would actually hatch. They had a bad experience last year and I didn't want them to be disappointed again this year.

Now, when these are done, I have some eggs being shipped - Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, a mixture of blue/green eggs and then another mixture of olive eggers..... I was going to order some Delaware also but I decided against that for now. I think I might just order pullets from TS - more of a guarantee that way, rather than ordering eggs. I'm not sure though - I have to wait and see what the hen/roo ratio is for these. Where I live, I can only have 50 poultry of any kind and I already have 25 in my flock. I will be selling some of my hens this summer, giving my BO roo to a friend with a mean EE roo that she wants me to butcher for her and then giving away some of the chicks I hatch out.......I just started last year with whatever I picked up at TS - I had no clue what I was getting when I bought them - now that I have a bit more of a clue, I want to change things up a bit in my flock.

Day 14 candling, and I have 5 left... this is not great out of 10 set, but I'll take it, if all 5 make it through lockdown and hatch. Four of them are out of my one pullet who I have NOT had babies from yet, so I am anxious to see what she can produce. The other one is a full sibling to my black and white duo which are two weeks old now :D

I have what looks like 36 fertile --- out of 38 set --- Buff O. x Delaware ( cross ) eggs, due to hatch on Feb. 21st.
I am looking for some Swedish Flower & Welsummer chicks, not eggs. Know anyone that has them now or will, soon ?
Thanks for any leads you can give me ! -- Vera

they may be infertile but only day 5...i would error on the side of wait and see.
You can always throw them out later
If they look like that on day 10 then pitch if you want.Me i wait until day 17 then you KNOW if it isnt dark or mostly dark its probably a quiter or non starter.
Too many ppl make the mistake of thinking one is dead and find out its not later .
I agree w/ Rox- I don't even candle until night 17 anymore, by then you should know for sure.

Sorry for the loss of your Isbars. I am going to continue to send you good luck vibes for your next hatch & your frizzles!

I found the frizzles lady on ebay and saved her in my list. Maybe, just maybe, when I have a free incubator I will get some eggs from her to
Thank you MaahBeaker! Glad you saved her, she packs REALLY NICE, I got them in only 2 days & she sent 5 extra eggs- none broken.

Good luck!! I do want to just say, on shipped eggs I was totally freaked about the crazy air cells and misplaced air cells. I even had air cells so big that I was positive the tiny blob in there was not going to hatch or be fully formed. I left them and they all hatched!! So, unless you don't see anything, I would leave them, cuz you might be surprised. Out of 16 shipped eggs, 13 made it to lockdown and 12 hatched!! I had 1 infertile an 2 blood rings early on, but they were very obvious.

Come on chickys hatch hatch hatch!!
Of the 9 I had, only 3 ever developed. I don't candle until they are ready to lock down, that way I know for sure. The 6 I tossed were clear, never even began to develope. I'm so glad you had such a good hatch!!!

Pug..soo sorry for the loss of those babies. :(

Congrats to those that have had some hatch. When you get all of the ones that went into lock down to hatch, well, it's a pretty exciting thing. :)

And what is it with all of these talented people? I couldn't put a bator together. No way. Show me all the pictures you want, instructions, I just couldn't do it..DH on the other hand! He could do it. He loves to build things..especially anything wood.

Here is a picture I took a few days ago of one of my EE eggs. Coming along. Blurry, but you can see the baby at the top of the O marked on the egg.

Help! I have a chick that just hatched this morning. And. It keeps flipping over on to its back. I tried wrapping it warm cloth in a cup and still in the bator,, but it keeps jumping out then back on its back again. Thanks for suggestions. The chick is a late hatch by 2 or 3 days.
