FEB HATCH-ALONG THREAD ...COME JOIN US.... EVERYONE!

Thanks 3D and inthesticks....

I have no idea about the yolk rotting...thats why I am concerned that what did survive my postman is COVERED in it!

Inthesticks I love the "ornamental" rabbit breeds, but I make my money off the meaties...although I dont care what ANYONE says, a NZW is an AWESOME pet quality rabbit! My Buck will follow me around the yard like a little dog! LOL!!!

CAN MY HATCHES BE SAVED?

Hi. I joined this group a few weeks back and posted a few times, but holy cow, I just can't keep up with all the msgs here, lol.

Today I have a few questions of my own.

1) I have a broody on 7 eggs. They were due to hatch yesterday. Three have hatched. How long should I leave the remaining eggs in hopes that they will hatch? It's interesting that the only ones that have hatched so far are the ones I did not ever candle. I'm wondering if I handled the others too much. I candled only 4 times, tho. There was movement in some of the ones that have not hatched as late as the last candle over the weekend, tho I only candled 2 of the 7 that day.

2) I have 20 more eggs in the incubator. I took the word of the person I got it from that it was calibrated, so even tho my thermometer showed temp a little low (95 not 99) I trusted the brinsea thermostat. (I know, rookie mistake but...well, I'm a rookie.) Put eggs in to start on Saturday pm. Candled just a few (6?) yesterday saw minimal development in some and no dev in others. Put another thermometer in there and it, too, showed 95 degrees. I turned up the brinsea thermostat to 102 in order to get temp up on auxilary thermometer to 99. Will that much temp difference affect the early development? And if so, is there hope that the eggs can 'catch up' now? Should I wait til say, sunday, then candle and toss duds?

TIA for all the expert advice I'm sure to get!
Sorry, hope I'm not breaking any rules but I'm quoting my own post to try to get some responses. Could really use some expert advice.

i LOVE the colors of them all!!! that little black one looks like my Birchen Bantam Cochin I was telling you about!~!!

Thats my little runt- he's not eating mch @ all. I take him to the water (it's that save a chick stuff). He drinks, but is not interested in food. I'm not sure he'll make it & he's my fav!

OK, so yesterday i was infuriated when I had some beautiful eggs ruined because my mailman delivered stuff that was *clearly* packaged with labels to hold for pick up AND that contact was to be made upon delivery....

package: (you know, the one that was crushed, soaked, and sitting in the cold at my front door yesterday)

my husband said, CALL! complain! do something!! But, I let it go bc I had extra eggs still....

SO....TODAY....I have TWO packages that are HOLD FOR PICK UP!! With my phone number written all over the boxes....

DELIVERED to my house....

this was my lovely surprise:

two different packages....
HALF of my eggs are RUINED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I called and flipped out on the 800 number for the USPS...i have a case opened now!! This is ridiculous! Even my mom just came over and was so upset by the carnage!

I hate to even tell the person who sent me these eggs what happened.

On a happier note, look what hubby has made for me!!!

Now I have a question:
The eggs that are covered in yolk and egg white, they are BAD dirty and sticky and nasty. I know you shouldnt wash eggs before incubating, so what would you do in this case?

I'm usually a pretty laid back person, or I guess a door mat type. ...see the bright side of things, turn the other cheek, just let things go... etc. But this is ridiculous! I'm glad you filed a complaint. The first time the PO messed up... um, ok. But to do it two days in a row?! Come on, that just isn't right.

I would take my smashed eggs and dump them on the PO desk! Ok, so I wouldn't do that really... but I'd think it with spite! LOL.

Not sure about the yolk all over. Don't they sell an "egg wash" type deal at the farm stores? I think it's supposed to be able to wash the eggs and seal them safely. I don't know if that counts for incubating the eggs though.

Maah, I dont know, I guess it is the new wellbutrin that has me not already in jail tonight for the egg massacre that showed up on my doorstep! I swear if I catch this mailman with another box headed to my doorstep, oh my GAWD, i will probably end up getting pepper sprayed!!!

Thanks everyone for letting me vent. I am officially done getting eggs in now, so I am just looking for an answer on the dirty eggs before I set my last batch!

Quote: OMG that is terrible! I would be going sideways if that happened to me! I have had my stupid mail lady bring most of my eggs that are also clearly marked 'call & hold for pick up" I went to the PO & complained in person. It didn't happen again. But yesterday when I went to pikc up the chicks she was in there and said "oh I could have brought them to you" My response was "well IF I wanted you to delievery them the box would not say to hold it for me to pick up- and besides my poor eggs didn't fair too well w/ you delivering them when you were NOT supposed to- can't imagine what shape my chicks would have been in!" She just walked away

I am really happy right now! Of the 12 shipped eggs I received, 11 show development today (day 7). One has a crack that I just noticed, so I tried to put some tapeover it. I think it may be developing, but I'm not sure. It may have died - I will keep an eye on it and recheck in 10 days.

HAPPY HATCH DAY, VALERIE!!! She has worked all day!!! She's beat!!

So stinkin' cute!!! I'm a little concerned about her rear... more blood came this hatch & what seemed to stay in the shell when Bebe hatched yesterday is still attached to Valerie's butt. Is this normal? Here's a pic... I don't see anymore blood & I don't want to flip her around yet & I surely don't want to tug on anything... is this ok? Will it just come off?
