Well, I woke up this morning, and I have a pip! No wonder I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep. This little guy also makes A LOT of noise!!!

Yay, a pip! The chirping may encourage the others to pip too!

Okay so the leg popping out of the joint is called spraddle leg - I always just thought they couldn't keep their feet underneath from the type of flooring.
She hatched early today & when I moved her out the the bator(lined w/ non slip) & into the brooder, I noticed that one was a little off - gave it an hour or so then wrapped the legs & band aided them close. I have another chick from my Jan hatch that has a really messed up joint- it's much larger than the other & it's foot is kind of twisted been wrapping her leg more straight & have to boot her foot so she wont hobble on the joint. If this new one can get along as good as or better then I'll be a happy momma!
This pic of her shows it kind of. see how it angles in @ the joint like weak knees. I plan on having this ones (Wobble) & my jan hatch chick (Krip) together in about a week or so. because Krip is 1/2 the size or less than it's hatch mates.

It looks more like a slipped tendon to me, and not spraddle leg. If she is walking (hobbling) along on her hock, then it is likely a slipped tendon. Spraddle leg is when the whole leg (or both legs) slip out to the sides when they try to stand up & they end up landing on their bum because they cant get their leg to stay underneath them. There are some links for treating slipped tendons if that's what you choose to do. Treatment is a lenghty process and not a guarantee. Spraddle leg is a lot easier to treat. Sorry for your chick. Keep us updated on what you decide.

Wobble is now standing & can walk if paying attention!!!!! I redid the wrappings late last night - I have snugly wrapped the joints in place & continued w/ the spraddle leg approach of having the band aid hold the legs closer together. So far so good & improving. I have lots of patience so I am going a treatment & pt route w/ both Wobble & Krip(my other joint issue chick, have now gotten her/he off of walking on the joint)

I also have been dipping Wobble's beak in the water & food thru out the day just encase it's not doing it on it's own. Now I am just hoping they are both ladies so they can spend lots of time in the house!

That is awesome if this works for you. Is it possible you can post a picture of Wobble standing in her joint wraps? I would love to see how you wrapped it, and see this work for somebody. I have had failed attempts at correcting slipped tendon, and sure hope it works for you. If it does, it will give me some hope. Please keep us updated on her progress.

You really don't have to do anything, promise! You want it to dry up so that it will harden and shrink. It's ok if the chick doesn't absorb it at this point. Mine was very similar. It was weaker the first few days, but after some sugar/electrolyte water and food he perked up just fine. You could try making some mash with ground up feed mixed with the water to make it applesauce consistency. That way you're sure it's eating something. I don't know about the goopy vent, but what I did for mine was take it out of the hatcher and rinsed it off with warm water when it was drying out because there was fecal matter on it.

The only real complication from this would be mushy chick disease, which is basically peritonitis from bacterial infiltration into the abdomen. However you can't do anything to prevent or treat that unfortunately, but it doesn't always happen.

Thank you!!! I had another hatch in the middle of the night with a hernia (I guess), too!! Why does it happen? I'm confused. I had one hatch in between the two that is fine. The one that hatched in the wee hours (Rocky) looks better than the other one. She is strong, jumping over the other eggs, & chirping away. No weakness noted at all. Emma is getting stronger & she is eating chick start & continues to drink electrolytes. I think she's doing good, but I'm going to work on cleansing the area today. My main concern is that the other chicks will peck at it & make it bleed

Well the surviving eggs from the incubator incident (bulb burned out temp down to 74*, cold eggs) hatched a day or so late. Of the 17 in there 10 hatched. Of mrheinz eggs - I got 1 OE (another pipped, started to zip but died), 2 RC RIR, 2 Speckled Sussex, 1 Bjarther Icelandic (in a different incubator however), and 1 bantam Langshan. None of the Ameraucanas or Welsummers even pipped (4 eggs total). Of my own eggs, I hatched 3 EE/OEs and my 1st Icelandic from my flock (3 of my EEs didnt pip)


mrheinz' bjarthur Icelandic, 2 RIR, 1 OE (black in front), 1 bantam Langshan (black in back) and 2 Speckled Sussex (1 chipmunk, 1 light)

2 Icelandics (dark one is bjarthurs and chipmunk is our own)

Our 3 EE/OE and 1 Icelandic - 2 of the EE/OE look like they will be rumpless (hens covered by a splash rumpless Araucana)

I am so happy that I got anything out of those eggs, I didn't think they would make it.

That's great!!! Those lil chicks sure wanted to see their bator momma, didn't let a little thing like getting cool stop them!!
