February 2017 Hatch-a-long

When this happened to me, a Marans breeder told me that I was finding out the hard way that my BCM had wheaten genetics. Here's our RIR/BCM cross on the left.

BCM should always breed black (because it is dominant) unless it carries a recessive gene for brown.

I was also told that it was a good idea to take any potential BCM rooster breeder and cross him with a brown hen about 20 times to verify whether he is pure.
So we pulled ours out of the breeding pool.

My Marans are splash/blue and wheaten. I'm not really "into" black coppers. The splash rooster should be the father of them all but now I'm questioning things lol. All of the Marans x Marans are from Wheaten pullets.

So that clearly explains some of the coloring.

Well the splash is the same as a black but being Bl/Bl instead of bl/bl. And then I know on another gene they (black/blue/splash) are E/E while the wheatens are E^Wh/E^Wh, but I'd still expect them all to look the same since they would end up E/E^Wh, unless maybe females only get one copy of that? I'm going to have to do some research and ask on the genetics thread. The calculator does not seem to work properly with Marans genetics.

ETA I thought maybe my splash is carrying wheaten but none of the chicks look wheaten, as I don't think wheatens have any striping but I may be wrong.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure either, but all four of the wheaten chicks we got from our BCM were chipmunk striped, and i was really hoping it meant female... sadly, 4 out of the 5 were males (another reason not to use him in the breeding pool. He produces about 80% males!

I'm on day 20 on my first hatch and I hear peeping. How long does it usually take for the chicks to crack the egg? Do I need to be concerned if I don't any cracking on the shell but hear the chicks?

I heard peeping and the eggs were rocking 2 days before they pipped.

HEY EVERYONE, look who decided to join us afterall!!!! Welcome home little buddy. Number 10 hatched. 100% hatch rate again.
