February 2017 Hatch-a-long

Well so far two hatches in and I'm 10-10. I must say if it continues like this, after all four hatches I will have 30 EEs. Needless to say I have started a third coop and run. I would have never guessed I would hatch this many. I will be building a new brooder tomorrow to accommodate all the chicks.

I went to Costco yesterday and asked if I could have one of their giant produce boxes (you know, like the potato boxes) and they just went back and got me one... and then I thought, "How the heck am I going to get this in my van?" The produce guy must have read my mind - he showed me how to fold it up. Whalah! New brooder!

Well, there's a Feb/March one we could join, or we could just go rogue and start a March one. I have 29SWF, 18 Silverudd's Blues, and 31 CCL due in 11 - 17 days.(staggered a bit) and it's always good to bounce ideas, worries, frustrations, anecdotes, etc during the process.

Oh my goodness, they are so beautiful! Congratulations on these precious little peeps and on the ones trying to become little chickadees too!

Thank you, everybody! These little babes are just mixed breed chicks I gathered from my flock, no special breeds or anything. That being said, I've had a ball deciphering what I think is in each chick. Comet had a Speckled Sussex mommy, and no clue who was dad. Stardust has some Silver Laced Wyandotte in her, possibly some Black Australorp, Stella had a Light Brahma mama and I'm guessing black Australorp daddy. Luna has Buff Orpington in her, no clue what else. I hatched out 12 "chickadee/chipmunk'' marked chicks, and they are beautiful. I am trying to find a home for 8 of them, if anybody lives in VA.

Mixes are fun! That's my favorite part of hatching my seramas. I never know what they will look like.

On, they have been so fun. I can tell them apart, they are cuter, and just more exciting. I realized I prefer hatching mixes to pure-breeds any day. I have had so much fun this hatch. I can't wait to see them grow up and see what their feathers grow in as.

I haven't even updated on my Feb hatches. Around Valentines Day, i hatched 21 of 26 from my flock. 12 of 15 seramas, 3 of 3 chocolate Orpingtons, and 6 of 8 bantam cochins. 5 DIS very late.

Last week, I had humidity issues, and a temp spike on night 18, only hatched 3 of 8 shipped seramas, from California, post office was rough on them anyway. But hatched 9 of 11 bantam cochins. Several full assists, because of my humidity issues. But overall, the chicks are doing great!

Currently have 11 lavender orps, 4 ohikis, 4 silver duckwing OEGBs, and 5 cochins, and 3 self blue OEGBs in. Some on day 9ish, some one day 2. And in the other incubator, 23 Call Duck eggs!! So excited for those, due 3/25!

As of now I have 4 sex- links and also 2 buffs praying for the buffs lost humidity while at the store cat knocked the askew. Have a few pips and one other zip hoping for more by morning

Well nothing more to report one of the buffs is having issues can't stand think it's a goner. No other action I'll wait till tomorrow to see if anything else happens then I'll candle the eggs but I'm happy with 5 for now
