February 2023 hatch-a-long

One, and only one egg looking fertile so far.

I will not get the shipped eggs till next week, I hope the rooster will make the rounds with my hens.

I have yet to crack any eggs but 🤞 both our boys do their job.
I caved and ordered some "pot luck" eggs. After ordering I was told I may have a delay of a week or two though. I may get all one breed or a mix of each breeds eggs (all eggs except OE/EE are pure) Breeds are
- Lavender Araucana
- Olive/ Easter egger
- Buff laced polish - Straight/Frizzle
- Furness Pekin (Our version of Cochin bantams)
- Silkies
- Buff Orpington standard

Eggs were sent today. I don't think they will arrive this week, but they were collected today so even if they sit over the weekend and come next Monday/Tuesday they will only be 4-5 days old. I'm hoping for some Orpington eggs, I hear they are great birds and out of the breeds listed it's the only one I don't have.

*Edit**
it's 9 Polish, 2 Lav Araucana and 1 BO. I'll have to do a separate order for just some BO in the future

I’m planning to set eggs on the 28th to hatch mid/late February. I have an order of hatchery chicks (Speckled Sussex, Andalusian, and Partridge Rock) shipping the week of 2/21 and want to only have to deal with one cycle of brooding/raising/integrating this year.

My rooster is an Easter Egger. He is the product of a breeder-quality Ameraucana over a hatchery Olive Egger hen. His mother laid a medium green egg, so there is a chance he is homozygous for the blue egg gene.

He is in with 5 hens - a Delaware, a Speckled Sussex, a Barred Rock, a Sapphire Gem, and an Easter Egger who is the product of the same Ameraucana over the Barred Rock. Right now, only the Sapphire Gem is laying regularly. I’m hoping the others pick back up soon so that I will have a nice variety to hatch. My horses have started shedding; at least THEY have gotten the memo that the days are getting longer. 🤣

After a disastrous hatching season last year, I upgraded my old Janoel 12 for a brand new Nurture Right 360 this year. Fingers crossed for a successful hatch!

I went along time before buying an incubator. I made my own incubators,
next I bought a yellow top incubator from a friend. It quit on the second hatch. (My husband hated the yellow top incubator because it would beep some times. I made a point not to buy any more beeping incubators. I think the real reason is he doesn't like me to hatch, with a beeping incubator, you cannot sneak hatch.)
I bought an incubator off Ebay I think it was used. (I had to get a quick-y replacement incubator for my yellow top one, This one took 1 week in the mail. So much for quick... ) Foam, hand turn, still air.
My latest one is a foam with turner and fan. I did get that from the feed store. I like it best because I can set them and walk away if I wanted. But I usually still move them to my still air foam incubator to hatch just to keep the one with the fan pristine.

Yeah!
I have been watching the egg site where I bought my eggs to set, the eggs are flying off the shelves. I am glad ordered mine early I have a good selection.

I am surprised we don't have more people in this Feb 2023 set page. Maybe they will join when they get their eggs.
