February 2023 hatch-a-long

Pics
The two Easter eggers remain… plus our newest hatch in the incubator and then newly added to the brooder tonight after 11.
We did have one DIS :/ not sure what happened but there’s no internal pip and no movement. I opened the air cell for an emergency add off air but it was clear the poor thing was done. Which really sucks bc you can see the beak right there - all it needed to do was wiggle a little and it would have been fine. 😔 sad times

Where can we find it?? I just searched the App Store and came up with nothing
Sorry, my job the last few days has me so stressed out I didn't have the brain power to check my notifications (possibly going on strike at the end of the week. Scary).

I'm glad you all found it! The sourceforge link for HatchKeeper is it, and it's been infinitely useful for me - I've customized it to various incubators, hatch groups, etc, so I can check my data later. If you used the Advanced tab you can monitor each egg individually too.

My older hen whent broody, and she is not able to handle brooding eggs as well, so I want to break her, but its just easier to give her eggs and just sell the the chicks later. plus, chicks!

Four brown eggs, two green, I got these eggs from a family member so who knows what I will get! (I may keep one if she really catch my eye, females only!) set date. Feb/4/23 at 2:45 pm
It is officially day three, all six eggs are fertile, and going on strong.the blood island formed rather quickly (the day after I placed them!), I am questioning if they started developing on the car ride home?

But anywho, they look good, mamma is probably going to be very happy, she has horrible luck with chicks, this is her fourth hatch.

Out of three hatches we got single chicks two out of three times with her. And the other had three chicks out of four. So wish her luck.

Oh I know. It’s just funny. :) several students from other classes today came rushing in only to exclaim “oh no! It’s dead!” 🤣 they most assuredly were not. But it probably happened 4 times today
You may have answered this in the last 87 pages, but do you take the chicks home once they hatch or they go home with kids?

So we want to do the right thing by the chickens and the students are not all prepared to take care of chickens (and the college doesn't allow them in the dorms) so we have a couple options available:
  • Students MAY take their chick home on spring break IF they provide proof of approval from their parents and pictures of their enclosure at home
  • One student (not in the class) offered to take home 4 because they already have chickens and I've spoken with their mother who is excited to take them
  • One may stay here in our classroom as part of our animal caretaking collection for students to work with/train/care for
  • Two other employees have chickens already and have offered to take any that are not going home with a student so the rest will go with them

TLDR; I have back up homes for all of them.

Just a quick FYI on this point. Chickens do not do well alone, as a general rule. I’d plan to keep 3 (in case one dies, as chicks can be very delicate) if you go this route.
