Thanks. Just built it after setting all the eggs I sat. Had plenty of lumber and buit a drop shed off of a shed I already had and closed in the North and East sides. The shed made a wall for the west side and am using a tarp on the south side to block the wind.
It's 8'long, 3' wide' and about 2 feet deep. Put pine shavings on the ground under it and will later change them
out and spread in the garden area. No dust,no mess, and really keeps any smell down.
Did not put legs on it but stacked two cinder blocks on each corner and sat it on them. Easy to move any time it needs moving.

I have bad news on my first hatch The fist one that hatched was doing fine when I left for the weekend My sister got here an hour after I left and it had managed to get through the grate blocking off the water and drowned then then power went out don't know why someone must have hit a pole. My sister left when she came back power had cut back on and the humidity was 80% and another one piped but died and I don't know why. It didn't even get out of the shell it just completely zipped it and that was it. When I got here I got the humidity back down and removed the 2 dead chicks but since then there has been nothing no movement of the eggs and no sounds. I think it is a complete lost. i don't know what I am going to do. I will give it a few days since today at 5:30 will have been 21 days, but i am nor going to hold my breath though(even though I am still hoping for a miracle). I guess I am the only one to blame maybe If i had planned better so I would have been here I could have controlled the humidity.

Thanks for all the info on my newly hatched chicks, sorry I called them "mutts" but I am a dog lover and that is kind of a term of endearment to me

. You were all correct about the different colors, there are some interesting mixes...lol. Batch #2 is on day 10, candled them the other night and removed 6 that were not fertile out of the 25 in there. I am hoping for extreme egg layers from the girls and maybe some different colored eggs besides the blue I get now.

lockdown today!

i'm hopeing for a better hen to roo hatch rate so far of the first hatch i did 8 out of 10 were roos,
the second hatch looks to be 2 out of 4. so fingers crossed that this one ends up with more hens than roos

Hi all,

Well I worked all day and mostly didn't think too much about the eggs and next week. Didn't get the feed or the brooder put together yet so I still have things to keep me busy this week. The old bator is holding temperature so I will be able to but the silkie eggs in it until the cochins hatch. Planted a ton of veggies and imagined how nice it would have been to have the peeps at the greenhouse eating the weeds. Of course if that was the case I would probable have not got anything done. Lockdown at 7:00pm Tuesday! I really hope I hear a noise or a chirp on day 18. Here's to good hatches to all.

my 1st hatch of this season is peeping and shaking right now. in the bator is 2 duck eggs (1st ones i have got to personally hatch) very exciting, and a bunch of eggs. i don't know what they are exactly, i can't remember. candled all of them yesterday and all the cell looked about the same size. this is also my first hatch with the hatch o meter:).

Well, I have had 3 BLRW chicks hatch today, day 22. I have 3 others with pips, including a Cochin and 2 SLWs.

Here is a video of the 3rd BLRW chick making it out of the shell.

Those of you with late hatches, do not worry! Mine didn't do a darn thing until day 22 and the others are probably going to make me wait until day 23 by the looks of it.

Wiggles on Saturday morning. Took out the clear eggs, turned off the auto-turner, and locked everything down Saturday evening. Nothing since

Today is day 20. Having a hard time waiting for something else to happen!

My broody hatched her first eggs this weekend! I was sure that they would not hatch, she left the nest with only 5 days to go due to a heatlamp accident and most of the eggs were cool to the touch. 8 out of 10 eggs hatched! I am leaving the last 2 for another day or so as today would be day 22. The babies are super cute (pics are coming!) a few are buff orps but most of them are BO/red star crosses. I am hoping they turn out to be pretty, decent egg layers. Anyone ever have this cross before?
