FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

UGH I just had another silkie born last night, and it looks like it has wry neck and one of his feet is clawed. He can't get up! I'm about ready to sell the new bator and give up. I have about 17 chickens already, guess I should just them hatch them out, they do a better job.

Like I said on another post, this has been the hatch from hell for me. !

Day 20 here in lockdown. I am using a hova-bator and have followed the directions(which is about 2 sentences) I am concernd about the humidity being to low. It does not say to put a sponge in the center or other moist things like I have heard people say they put in their bators. The bator only came with a thermometer, not a humidifier thermometer.Does anyone use a hover-bator (no fan) model and could you please tell me you experience with it:)

I have a still air hovabator that seems to do quite well. The main issue with these, as I've heard, is to put them in a stable room. We have it in the living room on a slatted table (so there's air circulation underneath). We have radiant heat in the house, so the ambient room humidity is usually 40-60% with a constant temperature of 68-70 and no drafts. I keep a hygrometer in there and it seems to need one trough filled for the first 18 days (25-40% humidity, usually in the 30's) and all filled during lockdown (60-75% humidity, though it spikes significant when the hatching begins). The main issue I have are hot/cold spots. I've had three thermometers in there at times and know just where the spots are now. I try to rotate the eggs during the first 18 days so compensate, but I don't know if this is helpful or not. The spots result in a pretty staggered hatch, sometimes taking 24 days.

Thank you, and yes your info is very helpful. I will definetly pick up a hygrometer for the next batch of eggs. We also keep ours in the bathroom with a oil heater to stabilize the room temp. I did not put any water in it for the first 18. Maybe I should have.:/Congrats on all you new babies!

**Update**
Candling on day 10 revealed I had 4 clear eggs. The 2 B.O.'s, 1 Wyandotte mix, and 1 unknown turned out to be infertile. Bummer...

But I still have 6 good looking eggs still growing!!!! Currently on day #16 and everything is going smoothly!

Good luck to you all!

We have chicks! 5 of 6 hatched and are doing great!
All 5 of them pip'ed pretty early on day 21. Then 3 came out in the morning and the other 2 later in the evening.
The last egg never pip'ed and I can't detect any movement... so I'm leaving it in the bator for another day.

The chicks are all looking good, and seem to be full of life. They are enjoying a quiet night in the brooder.
Been a long hatching day for them with all the kids and family watching and cheering them on.

Good luck to those hatching!

Today is day 21 and I have no pis or movement in my bator:( i am worried that they are not going to make it. I will keep eggs in for a few more days:fl but it looks like my first attempt at incubating has failed:th

DAY 20...19 in lockdown...1 'OE' pip, 1 bantam cross pip, 12 'OE' and 5 bantam crosses waiting waiting waiting. more later. and yes I still have pics to post for the other hatches...
