FEBRUARY Hatch-A-Long, come join in!!

Ok, tried to candle the eggs but I knew that I wouldn't know what to really look for and also I couldn't see through them anyway. I did see through one of the ameraucana eggs and it had a lot of veins. So I guess I just leave them all and see what hatches. It's kind of more exciting that way. I guess!

I promised DH I wouldn't candle until 10 days, but I couldn't help it (we're on day 4). I had to look in the sebright eggs, just HAD to look in at least one... so I looked. DEFINITELY something growing/forming in there, definitely can see a network of blood vessels and a blob of something moving. So I looked in another one. And another one. We have 5 sebright eggs, and I looked in 3--all three appear to have chicks forming!

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' bout, Willis!

Mind to add someone else? I am going to try four of my silkie's eggs. I checked some to make sure they are fertile which they looked to be so I am going to attempt to hatch some February 18th. I was hoping that I would get some broodies from the bantams I got this month but so far none of them have the inclination whatsoever. they laid about half a dozen eggs in the little bit of time I have had them so I thought, what the heck. This is my third attempt hatching and if nothing else it warms up the bator in case I can't get any of the hens to go broody in march. I prepaid for some ameraucana eggs to be shipped around that time. I'm still really bummed out about the last two hatches, but DH is cheering me on to try again with these four since they weren't shipped. We'll see I guess.

I'm putting some more in tomorrow for a staggered hatch. I have 5 Blue Marans from heathersboers and 11 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes from ILOVEFRIZZLES. They should hatch the same day as my turkey eggs, if those are viable. I'm going to get my old LG set up to use as a hatcher for a little more flexibility.

I have to ask, how do you do a staggered hatch? We have some in the bator now that are set to hatch on/around the 13th of February, and I *may* be getting some mille fleur eggs this weekend from a neighbor. It has been suggested I try a staggered hatch. Does that mean I wouldn't turn the second set of eggs while the first set is in lockdown? We do have a little bit of room in the bator for a few more eggs, plus I have a small tabletop 3-egg bator that is sitting here empty. It'll hold up to 5 bantam eggs, so I could probably get at least 4+ eggs in there.

If I do get the mille fleur eggs, I'm not sure how many I'll get, if any. My son's neighbor has a bunch of them running around their yard, both hens and roosters, which tells me FERTILE EGGS!! I am putting a note on their mailbox today, as their property is gated & I cannot get inside to knock on the door to ask if they'll sell their eggs. So I'm gonna leave them a note with my phone # and hope they'll call me!

Edited for typos.

Well, I've never done it before either! But I have two turners in my big incubator and I'm going to fire up my old LG still air to use as a hatcher. So when it's time to go into lockdown, I'll just move those eggs into the LG so they can have the higher humidity. So far, I'm a week apart on the batches, but I have more eggs coming in. I have to mark it all down on the calendar really well too, or I'm going to lose track.

Well, just went to try candling the eggs under my EE hen... I will have to wait and hope for an opportunity when she is not on the nest... she isn't nice at all when she is hunkered down on her eggs. Today should have been day 15 for most of the eggs under her... but I don't think she really committed until 2 sundays ago(making today day 12)
