Good morning everybody...Drum roll please I hatched 10 out of 10 that made it to lock down of the Wellies from shipped eggs that got lost at my PO....so they spent the weekend in there. These are from Julie Gabbard the last hatch I had 4 and they are laying nice big terra cotta speckled eggs.

That is super great,I never had much luck with shipped eggs except the last batches 2 I bought last year.
I will mainly now hatch my own eggs unless super duper deal comes up thats to good to pass up.

Hi,
From various threads I keep reading about low hatch-ability of shipped eggs.
In post #191 Livinwright wrote: "I find it absolutely amazing that the 12 EE eggs(they will be half breeds), that were in my basement for 2 weeks, are ALL coming along just as they should be! ... I think it is somewhere around 45-55 degrees...".
I think another factor is the age of the hen laying the eggs to be shipped. The older the hen the bigger the egg (Looks more desirable) but I believe the eggs are more fragile to ship.
Can anyone comment on successful hatches of their own eggs based on the age of the hen?

I had less vitality on eggs from very young hens even feeding them excellent feed....the shipped eggs I just hatched were big eggs. Eggs that are not shipped should hatch better less stress....I save my turkey eggs for 10 days before I set them and they all hatch out fine...so many variables on the care of the hens before laying etc....I do agree with the old timers they didn't like to hatch pullet eggs.....I understand why

So I have a dilemma. I'm going out of town tonight and won't be home until Sunday, but lockdown is supposed to be Saturday. I've been running my humidity at 40%. Should I leave it alone until I get home and hope nobody pips early, or increase it early? Maybe bump it up a little before I leave then again when I get home?

Me. Candled today because we had a scheduled power outage this morning, just makin' sure the babies are okay, but they're so far along I didn't see any movement. I saw veins and a large black mass, no movement. But, tomorrow is LOCKDOWN!!!!

Yes, I do realize the irony as a host of the February hatch, my chicks are due just hours before the 1st of February.
