I am currently feeding Scratch and Peck Layer feed, I know that it's not appropriate to feed that to chicks, correct? And I am due to have chicks hatching this weekend/next week sometime and everyone is together, I haven't separated the broody's so do I just go ahead and feed everyone the same thing, even the chicks? like an all flock variety? Anyone know of a non-GMO brand?

Here's a linky to the feed I'm using now- http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Natur...pebp=1434560182858&perid=1BVNQVAHMSQ7P93AKBVY

Search "creep feeder"...it's a way to let the chicks have access to the higher protein food they need.

If using a creep feeder, remember to make sure that the feeder used for the older flock members is up out of reach of the chicks as keeping the chicks out of layer feed is far more important than keeping older birds out of the chick feed.
L feed Flock Raiser, an all-flock type of feed, when there are growing chicks present. Mary

I, too, prefer to simplify things by just feeding my entire flock one ration that meets the needs of all birds and offering oyster shell on the side for intake by those birds actively laying at the time.

This is what I'm thinking of doing, I searched creep feeder and one gal said she just feeds everyone the chick starter. Can you tell me what you use for yours? And I actually have oyster shell out already, so that's one less thing to do before the babies hatch :D

Also, what is it about the layer feed that we don't want the chicks to have, the oyster shell?

Ack I keep thinking of things LOL! So do you just use the same feeder for everyone or do you have those little ones for the babies?

I was just looking up from the place I get my feed now and I can get the same brand in a chick starter or a grower feed, which one would be best to feed to everyone?

I prefer grower - the crumble size is a bit larger, which I like for the adult birds I'm feeding and is not so large as to be an issue for most standard chicks at the earliest point.
