Feed cost per bird question?

The store bought bird has been soaked in brine water (to enhance taste they say) to the point of adding 15 to 25% of the purchase weight.

The brands that advertise no added brine use plain water to the same end.

The home grown are 100% chicken with 100% real taste. Can't buy that at supper market!

Killer, (I like that, sounds like Flip Wilsons' Geraldine’s boyfriend)

Probably some undisclosed preservative to give it longer shelf life.

Maybe if we eat a store bought chicken followed by a Twinkie we can skip the embalming step when we die!

My total feed bill to raise 35 cornish x was $145.45, which comes to $4.16 per bird. Feed was purchased from feed mill and Fleet Farm in 50 lb bags (so no, no bulk discount or home mix) They had access 24/7, but no added light, so they only ate during daylight hours. Also, they were in a tractor for the last 5 of their 8 week life. Tractor was moved every day to fresh grass and alfalfa, which they readily stripped of its small leaves. Hope this helps.
