feed costs are they going up everywhere?

The high temperatures across the Central Plains states and drought in the southern half of the plains has effected the price of corn, soy and wheat. Durum wheat production is actually down due to spring flooding in the Northern Plains, but the rest is due to drought/heat. Yields are down, and so are stockpiles. This means prices are up. Gas and oil prices are also up, so transportation costs more. This all means our animal feed is up. It also means food prices in general are on the rise. Meat in particular, as it is fed the higher priced grain products.

I paid $30.28 for 50# hen scratch and 50# layer pellets.
Not sure of the exact price of each, as I only looked at the total.
Probably 15 something and 14 something

Oh, and hay is up to $20 bale now, one bale lasts my pony about 9 days.

We just paid $180.00 for 2 round bales for our goats.
And that is a bargain at the moment.
Almost all our hay is coming in from out of state.

I just bought a bag of Purina Layena pellets today, for $17 a bag. At the next closest feedstore it was $18.

Imp

With the 10% sales tax it was closer to $19 & $20.

No fun, no fun.

17.99 for 20% crumble for the laying hens and peas and need more already.
Paid 31.99 at Big R for 50# of black oil sunflower seed last wee.. Was 42 at the other mom & pop feed store. Will sure hurt the little wild winged ones this winter. Hay is going up here in SE Colo where it is irrigated near the Arkansas River, and alot is going to drought areas out of state. No wonder everyone is trying to get rid of their horses that they cant feed.

Word is from the farmers that it will get worse

Hay around here is 3.75-6.00 a bale. Not bad compared to what some of you are experiencing.
It's the same with everything though...even our food.
Smaller amount, higher price....either that or the ingredients are not so good and the prices are still going up.
At least the majority of the people on this site can fend for themselves to a point. I know many of the people here could probably support their family off their land, that's great and it's awesome that you can...I really think the need for that is coming.
It's going to get uglier.
