"Feed Grade" DE?

I'm almost finished with my coop and am searching for food grade DE. I called two local feed stores and asked if they carried it.
Both stores said they have "Feed Grade" DE. The clerk said that people use it in cattle feed (although it's not legal to) but it wasn't for human consumption.
I did a search on here for feed grade DE but couldn't find anything.

So I'm thinking that it is NOT safe for my chickens. Would I be correct?

NO, you are NOT correct.

Food grade DE is what you need. Any other type will kill your birds.

"Feed" versus "Food" is a matter of semantics.

I wouldn't use it. I'd only use the DE that is safe for human use. I'm currently searching to buy it locally. I really like the product.

I edited my above post, as I was unclear. Feed grade is fine to use.

Er, food grade DE IS a legal additive to livestock feed... Where did you hear it was illegal..?

The clerks at both feed stores told me that. It is "Feed Grade" not for human consumption.

Well, the clerk is wrong, it is perfectly legal. A lot of mills use it in their mixes because it reduces insect attacks on the feed, helps keep it dry because it absorbs moisture, and also adds trace minerals. They don't use MUCH DE in the feed mix, it only takes a little bit to work its magic.

I am new to this Chicken Raising, but I did find a great on line Food Grade DE. I ordered a 50lb bag for a reasonable price and it was at my door in 2 days. Here is the link:

Thanks for the link. The feed stores stated very clearly that the DE they carry was not safe for human consumption.
And since I want to be sure it's safe for my chickens and rather than take the chance,
I'll just order it online.
