feed prices not kewl

Yes I Buy the 18% layer mash in 100 lb bags. $17.11 for the 100#. It went up .80 since the last time I bought it. I have 15 gal. blue jugs that are everything proof and keep it fresh for the 3 weeks it takes to go through it. I wouldn't think of keeping it in the bags for that long.

OK,that's what I wanted to hear,That's what I get for about the same price.mine is called "York State Layer Mash"they also have a grower mash too..When I hear of people paying $14-16. for 50lbs. is seems extremely high.I've wanted to bring this up before but thought people would think I'm crazy.
This would be a big difference in your expenses. not using the big 3.
I use the 55 gal blue plastic barrels.I would like to get some with the screw on tops.I've been cutting the tops off and making a wood lid.Screw tops would be so much better. thanks for the reply. Will

Today I went to our local, family owned feed store because they have great service, I know the folks who own and run the place, and they know me by name there. I paid $60 dollars for 1 bag layer crumbles, 1 bag Diamond dog food and 1 bag of scratch.

The only reason it wasnt more is because the gal behind the counter who I know, said she had a couple of torn bags in the back that she could give me for cheap. I really believe in buying local and supporting family businesses, but MAN!

We buy from the mill also and it is less than half the price of the feed store.

We do mash for chickens and even include whey from cheese making like the grandparents did. Our meat birds flesh out better with the whey than without by far.

I store feed in a few old deep freezes I scrounged. Feed stays fresh and it keeps the mice out.

Your lucky! Our went up to $18.95 a bag! I can't believe it! And broiler feed is even more! I'm not even sure if our feed store gives discounts. We've been going there for over 6 years, you'd think they'd let us know by now.

oh no, they're not going to let you know, you have to ask! the only reason i knew was because one of the workers there is a friend of mine and asked me why i wasn't buying it in bags of 10 for the discount. otherwise, i wouldn't have known.

will, that is a GREAT price. i think there's a mill down in angleton, about 30 min from me. it's a co-op. i'm hoping they do custom bags. evans also does custom but they seemed so wishy washy when i started asking questions about what's in their bags it kinda scared me.

for those that get feed from the mill, do you ask for a special mix or do you get whatever they have? is it common for them to carry the probiotic there? a friend i know had to drive to san antonio to get his (which is 3 hours away).

That's what we are thinking about doing, but our co-op only sells min. of 1000 pounds and they're not in bags, so you have to have a container to put the feed in. But it was only $440 for 2,000 pounds of layer pellets, which IMHO is a great save.

you can get those blue plastic barrels for free. i've seen them on freecycle here and for sale cheap, like $6 a barrel, on craigslist. or ask a barrel racer (if you know one) where she got hers. i got my three for free from a barrel racer who knew a guy who knew a guy. lol. yes, i used to chase barrels with my horse.

you can also find on freecycle old chest freezers that no longer work. alot of my friends keep their grain in those to keep the mice away.
