Feed Prices...

Quote:
We have a large commercial flock and ship 1200 to 1300 dozen eggs a week to our organic co-op.

$266 a ton for conventional sounds about right. $400 for conventional, especially from a Wisconsin mill where a lot of it grows right next door, is pretty pricey.

It was bagged I am assuming yours is in bulk. Is that pricey for bagged as well? Just askin

For years there was a mill here in colorado that would make custom feed and bag in our own burlap bags or 25 cents a bag I liked that a lot. They are gone now though

I am on my 3rd mill in the last 5 years. They are dropping like flies. There are no more "mom and pop" mills around here anymore. I guess I should look into getting my own tractor powered feed mill?

mac in abilene, that sounds like one heck of an operation!!!

Yes, that's in bulk, augered into our feed silo. But should bagging it add over $3 to the price per 50#? I realize there is labor, bags, and floor space involved, but an extra $3 per bag?

Three bucks seems like a lot. There is a guy here that cleans a lot of grain and has a bagger. Two guys can put up a lot of bags but it is heavy work. Maybe a small batch charge in there as well.

So here is the breakdown of each of my feeds..

Broiler

515 Corn
300 Roasted Beans
110 Oats
4 Egg Innovations (Vitamins)
10 Poulty Pellets
5 Kelp
Total Weight #945
Grinding, mixing, and bagged
Total $190.60

Layer
500 Corn
310 Roasted Beans
110 Oats
4 Egg Innovations
5 Kelp
Total Weight #979
Grinding, Mixing, and bagged
Total $198.31

I plan on using this mix from chick to finish. This is my first pass at doing a custom type feed. Any recommendations?

I would drop the oats from the broiler feed. More of a filler than anything else. I would add some bulk Calcium to the layer. I have alfalfa meal added to my layer ration, which is a good thing in the Winter. I makes their poo green like in the Summer when free-ranging. I also use less corn and add distillers grain to my layer. It makes it a little cheaper.

I was tired of paying so much for feed at the ag store, so I went to the grain elevator people and bought 700Lbs of grain for 56.00 about a week ago. Had to drive a while, so I needed to get several sacks to make it worth my while.
